Saturday College Recap (5/6) Powered by Orlin & Cohen

Division-I:

Stony Brook:

The Seawolves jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI triple by Evan Giordano, RBI ground out by Shane Paradine and RBI single by Derek Yalon. Unfortunately, that was all for the Stony Brook offense as Delaware’s starting pitcher, Joey Silan, settled in and fired 7 strong innings to earn the W. Wyatt Nelson locked down the 2 inning save.Josh O’Neill was tagged with the loss as he allowed 6 runs over 6.2 innings with five walks and four strikeouts. Evan Giordano and Matt Brown-Eiring each had two hits for Stony Brook who drop to 19-25 on the season and 10-13 in CAA play. These teams will finish up their series on Sunday afternoon.

St. John’s 9, Villanova 10

The Red Storm fell just short in a back-and-forth game.  St. John’s got on top in the first inning off a sacrifice fly.  Both teams traded runs in the second which kept the Storm lead at one.  Offenses got going in fourth with a two-run double by shortstop Craig Larsen which gave Villanova the lead.  St. John’s responded with a three-spot to claim their lead back.  First baseman Aaron Mann lined a two-run double and designated hitter Tate Ballestero knocked a one-run single.  Both teams scored five runs combined again in the sixth, but this time Villanove had the better edge.  Larsen highlighted Villanova by bringing in his third and fourth runs of the day but the Red Storm responded with a solo shot courtesy of center fielder David Glancy and a throwing error.  Villanove tied the game up at seven all at the top of the seventh but the Red Storm responded once again and got back on top with an Austin Machado single that scored two.  Villanova was able to finally calm the storm and not only claimed the lead again in the ninth but shut the door.  St. John’s looks to avoid a series sweep Sunday at 1:00 PM EST. 

Fordham 5, George Mason 10

George Mason scored three in the first off a hit by pitch, fielder’s choice, and off a stolen base. The Rams responded with two solo shots, courtesy of first baseman Peter DeMaria and backstop Tommy McAndrews.  George Mason extended their lead in the third off a two-run double by catcher Connor Dykstra. Then in the sixth, George Mason put up a five-spot which put this one out of reach.  The Rams got two runs back in the sixth off a homerun by designated hitter Will Findlay and later in the ninth a solo shot by third baseman Daniel Bucciero brought in their fifth run.  The rubber match will be at 12:00 PM EST on Sunday.

LIU 10, Coppin State 11

Coppin State jumped out to an early two-run lead in the opening frame that was kickstarted by an RBI single by Liam McCallum. They would go on to tally five runs in the fourth, and four more in the fifth to extend their lead to eleven.  Brody Black, McCallum, Angel Colon, and Brett Curran all finished the day with two RBIs. The Sharks completely flipped the script and went on to score ten consecutive runs.  Jake Mastillo started the stretch with an RBI single and JC Navarro hit a two-run blast to cap off the four-run fifth inning.  Later in the seventh, both Jarod Wade and Seth Surrett brought in two runs each, both on singles.  However, despite the impressive finish, the Sharks fell just short of the rally.  LIU looks to win the series Sunday at 12:00 PM EST.

Hofstra 9, Monmouth 1

The Pride scored first with a three-run second inning thanks to a two-run single by center fielder Dylan Palmer and a one-run single by second baseman Santino Rosso.  The bats went quiet until Rosso woke them up with a solo blast in the sixth and Steve Harrington capped things off with an RBI single.  Rosso continued to dominate the box score and brought in his third run of the day in the seventh and then initiated a double steal later in the inning to extend the Hofstra lead to seven.  Monmouth would tally their lone run in the second half of the seventh.  Hofstra put their insurance runs on the board in the eighth and ninth with Rosso putting the book end on the rout with another RBI single to bring in his fourth run.  Hofstra looks to go for the sweep Sunday at 1:00 PM EST. 

Division-II:

Queens

Game 1: Queens 5, Saint Thomas Aquinas 4

Game 2: Queens 5, Saint Thomas Aquinas 0

The Spartans struck first in the fourth inning off a fielding error and extended their lead in the fifth off two solo blasts by third baseman Nick O’Connor and second baseman C.J. Cumb. The Knights tied the game in the sixth off a fielder’s choice and a two-run double by catcher Teovaldo Estevez. Saint Thomas broke the stalemate in the eighth off a sacrifice bunt but the Knights saved their best for the end. Jayson Rodopoulos tied the game off a solo shot and Juan De La Rosa got the curtain call as he knocked a walk off single.  

In the second game, the Knights would score the eventual game winning run in the opening frame off an RBI groundout. Rodopoulos doubled the lead on a sacrifice fly in the second. Second baseman Marc Cisco hit a two-run blast in the fourth and first baseman Matt Filip hit an RBI single in the fifth which capped off the impressive day for the Knights. The Knights will welcome D’Youville on Monday.

Adelphi

Game 1: Adelphi 2, Southern Connecticut State University 1

Game 2: Adelphi 4, Southern Connecticut State University 1

Designated hitter scored the lone run for Connecticut in the first off an RBI double. Adelphi carried their momentum right over from yesterday and won in heroic fashion once again. Anthony Cipri tied the game with a single in the seventh which set up Michael Draskin to walk it off for the Panthers with an RBI single.  Brendan Kenneally threw a complete game with seven punchouts.

In the second game, the Panthers scored first off a sacrifice fly in the second. In the fourth, both Draskin and Jack Wishner knocked RBI singles which extended their lead to three.  Connecticut scored their lone run in the sixth but could not keep up with the Panthers. Adelphi completed the impressive four game sweep which secured them their spot in the playoffs.  

Molloy

Game 1: Molloy 9, Southern New Hampshire University 3 

Game 2: Molloy 3, Southern New Hampshire University 13

Molloy split a double header that featured two lopsided games.

In the first game, New Hampshire tallied two runs in the opening frame.  However, Molloy quickly flipped the script in the fourth.  Garett Scavelli woke up the bats with a solo blast and Gavin McAlonie capped off the inning with a game-tying single.  Scavelli then kickstarted a four-run fifth inning with an RBI double and Aidan Larkin struck the dagger with a two-run single.  Later in the sixth, Matt Yip launched a solo shot which extended their lead to five.  Anothony Mansiero ended the stretch with a one-run single.  

Molloy scored first in the second game thanks to an RBI single by McAlpine in the opening frame.  Then in the third, New Hampshire scored four runs which was highlighted by a two-run shot by Anderson Moreno.  New Hampshire would hold onto the momentum and would put this one away thanks to a strong performance by Cam Caraher who hit two round-trippers. Daniel Rivera also had a strong day at the plate and brought in four runs.  

Division-III:

Farmingdale/Maritime

Game 1: Farmingdale 6, Maritime 7

Game 2: Farmingdale 3, Maritime 10

Freddy Forgione hit a solo shot in the opening frame which gave Maritime a one-run lead.  The bats went quiet until Matt Milone woke them up in the fifth when he ripped an RBI triple which doubled their lead.  The Rams took the lead in the sixth thanks to a solo shot by Chris McGuggart and a two-run single by Nolan White.  The Rams kept the offense going in the seventh as McGuggart brought in his second run off a single and Bobby Pollock crushed a two-run shot which brought their lead up to four. Maritime fought back and tied things up in the bottom half of the frame off a ground-rule double by Milone and a three-run double courtesy of Michael Frazzetta.  Maritime won the game off an RBI hit by pitch in the ninth.  

In the second game, Milone once again got on the scoresheet with a solo homerun in the first inning.  In the following frame, Daniel Deutsch hit a two-run shot to give the Rams the lead.  Teams continued to trade long balls as both Freddy Forgione and Rob Copozzi hit round-trippers in the third.  Maritime tacked on more runs in the fifth and Copozzi tallied his second home run of the day in the sixth with a three-run shot which sealed the win for Maritime.  

USMMA/St. Joseph’s 

Game 1: USMMA 6, St. Joseph’s 5

Game 2: USMMA 3, St. Joseph’s 10

It was a back-and-forth opening game.  The Golden Eagles struck first off a solo home run by James Maggio.  USMMA tied things up the following inning thanks to an RBI single by Travis Leatherwood.  Saint Joseph’s responded by breaking the stalemate with two one-run singles.  Then in the fourth, Joey Zanetti ripped a two-run triple to even the score once again.  Nick Vicino gave the Golden Eagles the lead once again in the sixth off a single but USMMA responded and ended up taking the lead in the same frame off a single by Tyler Reistetter.  Phil Krpata tied the game in the seventh but USMMA continued the trend and responded with a walk off thanks to a single by Charles Cahalan.

In the second game,  Krpata scored in the opening frame off a wild pitch.  The Golden Eagles did not lose control of this one and extended their lead to ten by the end of the eighth inning.  Both Vicino and Maggio brought in two runs each. USMMA scored their three runs, all off groundouts in the final two frames. Jack Kelly notched his fifth win of the season as he threw eight innings of two-run ball with seven strikeouts
