by Andy Smith

Division-I:

Hofstra 7, Monmouth 1

Brad Camarda was the star of the show as the senior fired the third no-hitter in program history. Strangely enough the first two were both thrown in 2018. The Pride had control of this one early as they built a three-run lead in the opening frame highlighted by a two-run double by third baseman Ryan Morash. Then in the third, it was Morash again, who brought in his third and fourth runs of the day, this time off a triple. In the fourth, Hofstra put up two more, this time off a Kevin Bruggeman single and a balk. Monmouth scored their lone run off a sacrifice fly in the same inning. Brad Camarda was the backbone of the team today, as he noted nine strikeouts, two walks, and one run, which was unearned. The Pride look to keep the momentum going and clinch the series win Saturday at 1:00 PM EST.

Stony Brook 11, University of Delaware 12

It was a back-and-forth game that ended with the Seawolves falling just short.  Bryce Greenly hit a lead-off homerun for the Blue Hens but the Seawolves responded in the following inning with an RBI double by Derek Yalon and an RBI single by Ryan Micheli which gave them a one run lead.  However, in the bottom half of the frame right fielder Brett Lesher lined an RBI double to tie things up at two a piece.  Left fielder Matt Brown-Eiring broke the stalemate in the fourth with a solo shot.  Delaware tied the game off an RBI triple in the fifth and then grabbed the lead off a two-run blast by Joey Loynd in the same frame.  The sixth inning featured an offensive explosion with a total of thirteen runs.  The Sea Wolves scored seven of those, which was capped off with a grand slam by third baseman Evan Giordano.  Delaware’s six-spot in the same frame was highlighted by a grand slam themselves, courtesy of shortstop JJ Freeman.  Delaware tacked on another run in the seventh to go up by two.  The Sea Wolves got within one in the final frame by scoring on a wild pitch but could not complete the comeback.  This series will continue Saturday at 6:30 PM EST.

St. John’s 3, Villanova 4

Left fielder Paul Orbon got the storm on the board in the second with a one-run single.  Villanova tied the game in the third with a solo shot by center fielder AJ Hansen.  However, in the bottom half of the frame, St. John’s scored twice, both via sacrifice flies.  Villanova was held quiet throughout, but grabbed their first lead in the eighth thanks to a three-run blast by third baseman Steve Grober.  Joe Mascio posted a strong start for St. John’s as he threw seven innings of one-run ball and tallied seven punchouts.  St. John’s looks to tie the series up Saturday at 3:00 PM EST.

Fordham 2, George Mason 1

Both teams opened the scoring in the third and tallied one run apiece.  Left fielder James Quinn-Irons hit an RBI double for George Mason and the Rams countered with a run that scored on a wild pitch.  Shortstop Nico Boza broke the stalemate in the fifth with a game – winning solo shot.  Nate Scott was dominant in relief as he threw 2.2 hitless innings and Ben Kovel secured his seventh save of the season.  The three-game set will continue Saturday at 1:00 PM EST.

LIU 9, Coppin State 6

The Sharks got on the board first in this high scoring game with a four-spot in the second inning.  Third baseman Christopher Hund opened the scoring with an RBI single and right fielder Seth Surett capped things off with a three-run blast.  The Eagles responded with a four-spot of their own in the third which was highlighted by a two-run single by left fielder Brody Black.  The Sharks got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the frame off a solo homerun courtesy of left fielder Jake Mastillo.  The Sharks added onto their lead in the fifth with an RBI double by Jarod Wade and another RBI single by Hund which gave them a three-run lead.  Coppin State got back on the board in the sixth and closed the gap to just one run but could not keep up as the Sharks scored two in the seventh which put this one out of reach.  The star of the show today was relief pitcher Jack VanDoran, who notched his third save of the season with seven strikeouts across four innings.  Game 2 will be played at 1:00 PM EST on Saturday.

Queens 5, Saint Thomas Aquinas 6

Queens put up two in the opening inning via a solo shot by second baseman Marc Cisco and a sacrifice fly.  The Spartans responded by scoring five in the second inning which was highlighted by two homeruns, one each by first baseman Gregory DiGiaro (2 RBI) and Sean Lynch (1 RBI).  Queens got within one run of the lead off a one-run double by Juan De La Rosa and a sacrifice fly in the third. Then in the fourth, the Knights tied the game off a solo home run by third baseman Andrew Ramirez.  DiGiaro would launch his second long ball of the day of the eighth to give the Spartans the lead.  Queens celebrates Senior Day on Saturday with a double header to wrap up this three-game set beginning at 1:00 PM EST.

Division-II:

Adelphi

Game 1: Adelphi 6, Southern Connecticut State University 4

Game 2: Adelphi 6, Southern Connecticut State University 5

The Panthers got on the board first in the third inning off a two-run double by right fielder Tim Feliz and backstop Alec Maag added another double of his own which scored one.  Then in the fourth designated hitter Joe Pellegrino crushed a solo shot to extend their lead to four.  Then in the fifth, Adelphi added another run in the fifth off an error and would score their final run in the seventh off a Feliz single.  SCSU got their first run on the board in the eighth via a solo home run by center fielder Andrew Eng and came two runs short of a rally in the ninth. John Rizzo led the Panthers today by throwing six shutout innings with ten strikeouts and only surrendered one hit.

In the second game, Adelphi once again got out to an early lead off a Michael Draskin single which scored two in the opening frame. Then SCSU scored four in the third which was highlighted by a three-run shot by left fielder Connor Goggin.  Kyle Olson got one run back for Adelphi in the third off a solo homerun. Connecticut scored their final run in the sixth off a sacrifice bunt.  Olson hit another solo shot for the Panthers in the bottom of the eighth to get them within one. Adelphi was able to sweep the double header with a walk-off two-run blast by Alec Maag in the seventh.

This four-game set will wrap up tomorrow with another double header beginning at 12:00 PM EST.
