GAME RECAP: Victor Frederick Dominates on the Mound, Crushes 3-R HR in St. Dom’s Victory

For a team looking to establish themselves as a championship contender, there is no bigger moment than facing the reigning New York State champs. Chaminade is the three-time reigning Catholic League champs and coming off one of the most dominant seasons in Long Island history.

St. Dominic, a team loaded with talent and looking for their first championship since 2009, had this one circled on the calendar for sure. The Bayhawks sent ace and St. John’s-commit Victor Frederick to the mound and he was up to the task.

Frederick was extremely effective and efficient as he cruised through a Flyers lineup that features five Division-I commits with all of them having championship experience. He allowed just three hits and struck out six batters. His contributions were not limited to the mound, though.

After Frederick and Chaminade starter Giacomo Travaglia traded zeros for the first three innings, the game changed in the bottom of the fourth. Cole Cruz started things off with a walk and Vin Deiosso ripped a single to put a runner in scoring position. Turns out, Frederick was not interested in a pitcher’s duel as he deposited one way beyond the left field fence for a three-run shot. It was a significant moment in the game as the Jayhawks took all the momentum and knew that Frederick was going to be tough to score against. They added another run on a wild pitch to score Thomas Garrett.

With the middle of the lineup coming up in the fourth inning, Chaminade had aspirations to cut into the lead. Frederik proved his mettle with a 1-2-3 inning to get his offense back in the dugout.

The Bayhawks really broke the game open in the fifth inning with three more runs – the big knock coming on a two-run hit by Francis Oliveri with the bases loaded which put the game essentially out of reach.

The Flyers finally got to Frederick in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Fordham-commit Matt Dieguez – which was his second hit of the game. Frederick’s day was done after that. He was relieve by Luke Lang in the seventh who fired a 1-2-3 inning.

Speaking to Axcess Baseball after the game, Frederick had the following to say:

“This was really a statement win. The boys played great we came and here and protected the nest. They’re not going to come in here and beat us. We’re going to go out and play every game like it’s our last.”
