by Andy Smith

Division-I:

Stony Brook 3, Northeastern 8 (10 innings)

Northeastern got out to an early two-run lead off a solo shot by second baseman Carmelo Musacchia and an RBI groundout in the third.  The Seawolves got on the board in the fifth off an RBI groundout by first baseman Brett Paulsen.  Then in the seventh, left fielder Harrison Feinberg launched a solo homerun to give the Huskies a two-run lead.  In the eighth, Stony Brook tied the game thanks to two RBI singles, one each by second baseman Evan Fox and backstop Ryan Micheli.  This one went to extras, but ended in the tenth following an offensive explosion for the Huskies as they tallied five runs.  Designated hitter Alex Lane kickstarted the run and first baseman Tyler MacGregor capped it off with an RBI knock.  These teams will continue the three-game set Saturday at 12:00 PM EST.

Hofstra 14, Towson 10

It was quite an offensive explosion at University Field as the Hofstra Pride hosted CAA rival Towson. Hofstra fell behind 6-0 in the top of the third, but if there’s one thing that’s true about a Frank Catalanotto-led team it’s that they will refuse to roll over. The Pride got 4 runs back in the home half of the third on a two-run double by Kevin Bruggeman and two-run single by Santino Rosso. After Towson extended their lead to 8-4, Brian Morrell got those runs back with a two-run blast to right center and in his next at bat, in the seventh inning, he hit a sac fly to make it a one-run ballgame. Later in the inning, a two-run error with Steve Harrington batting allowed the Pride to take the 9-8 lead. To their credit, Towson didn’t lie down either. A two-run shot in the 8th gave them a 10-9 lead, but the would not last. Dylan Palmer tied it up with an RBI single and Kevin Bruggeman’s two-run double gave them a two-run lead and Steve Harrington’s two-run HR gave them some cushion. Michael O’Hanlon locked it down with 1.2 shutout innings of relief to earn the win.

St. John’s 8, Seton Hall 6

Both teams put up three runs in the opening frame.  First baseman Alex Clyde knocked a two-run single for Seton Hall and first baseman Aaron Mann crushed a three-run blast for St. John’s. Then in the second, the Pirates reclaimed their lead via an RBI single by shortstop Max Viera. This lead was short lived, as the Red Storm responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame.  Two RBI singles, one each by right fielder Luke Orbon (2 RBI) and catcher Tate Ballestero got the bats going, and a sacrifice fly by Mann capped off the run. The offenses then went quiet, but in the sixth inning left fielder David Glancy hit a long ball to extend the Red Storm lead to four. Seton Hall responded but could not complete the comeback. Designated hitter Staus Pokrovsky lined an RBI double in the seventh, and third baseman Pat D’Amico brought in one off a groundout in the ninth.  St. John’s looks to get the series clinching victory Saturday at 11:30 AM.

Fordham 15, George Washington 14

This game was a back-and-forth offensive showcase. George Washington got on the board first in the opening frame off two RBI singles courtesy of second baseman Noah Levin and third baseman Robby Wacker. The Rams responded by putting up two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second. During this stretch, both designated hitter Peter DeMaria (2 RBI) and center fielder Ryan Thiesse hit RBI singles and left fielder Daniel Bucciero ripped an RBI triple. The Colonials then took over by tallying six runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth. A three-run blast by right fielder Eddie Micheletti was the highlight of this stretch. The Rams responded in the second half of the fifth with a two-run shot by second baseman Zach Selinger and scored a third run off an error. George Washington then scored four consecutive runs over the next three innings.  A two-run blast by designated hitter Alex Wright did most of the damage. The Rams kept fighting back and put up six in the eighth to claim the lead.  Thiesse got the bats going with an RBI knock and DeMaria (2 RBI) and right fielder Cian Sahler (3 RBI)  both knocked RBI doubles. George Washington tied the game in the ninth thanks to an RBI single from center fielder Sam Gates. It was only fitting for a game that went back-and-forth to end in walk-off fashion. Backstop Tommy McAndrews was the hero and lined an RBI double to center field to bring in the winning run. Fordham celebrates Alumni Day and hopes to carry the momentum from Friday’s big win on Saturday at 1:00 PM for the second game of the three-game set.

LIU 3, NJIT 14

The Highlanders put two in the first inning off a two-run blast by shortstop Ray Ortiz. Then in the third, catcher Luke Longo hit a solo blast which extended the lead to three. The Sharks got on the board in the third off an RBI groundout by designated hitter Jake Mastillo.  LIU then tied the score at three apiece in the following inning via a two-run single by third baseman Brian O’Boyle. NJIT would then take over the game by scoring eleven runs across the final three frames. Ortiz and Longo both hit their second home runs of the game, both three-run shots during this stretch to put the Highlanders over the top.  The Sharks look to even up the series Saturday at 2:00 PM EST.

Division-II:

Queens 10, Lincoln University (PA) 8 (10 innings)

The Lions put up a five-spot across the first three frames. Designated hitter/third baseman Wesley Hogan got things started with an RBI single and third baseman/pitcher Jaden Greenidge capped it off with a two-run blast. The Knights responded by putting up five runs of their own in the fourth. Both right fielder Jorsixt Jimenez and first baseman Anthony Fontana both hit RBI doubles which woke up the offense and then two fielding eros capped off the inning. The Lions quickly responded by tallying two runs in the same inning that was highlighted by an RBI double courtesy of second baseman Josiah Bowles. Queens then scored two in the fifth to even the score at seven off two RBI singles, one each by Fontana and left fielder Reed Hoskins.  Lincoln got back on top in the seventh off an RBI single by pinch hitter Damaal Sands, but this was short lived as Queens tied it up once again in the eighth via Juan De La Rosa RBI single. We got bonus cantos in this one and the Knights got going early by putting two in the tenth which put them in the driver’s seat. A double by Fontana brought in the eventual game winning run.  Reliever Joshuel Rodriguez was the winning pitcher, throwing three shutout innings and only surrendering one hit. These teams will continue the series with a double header on Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM EST.

Molloy 11, St Thomas Aquinas 3

Molloy had complete control of this one throughout, thanks to a complete game effort from Charlie Cucchiara, who tallied his fifth win on the season. The Lions scored first by putting up three runs in the second off a sacrifice fly and two RBI singles, one each by left fielder JJ DeVito and center fielder Garrett Scavelli.  Molloy put up another three-run spot in the following inning which was highlighted by an RBI double by first baseman Jake McCarthy. The Spartans got on the scoresheet for the first time in the eighth off a single by right fielder Andrew Guerra. Molloy responded in the same frame by putting up four runs, capped off by a two-run single from right fielder Anthony Maniseroto put this one out of reach. These teams will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 12:00 PM EST.
