GAME RECAP: Dom Carbone Carries No-Hitter Into 6th Inning, Rocky Point Wins 5-1

Last year, Dom Carbone was one of the several high-end Division-I players on Rocky Point’s Suffolk County Championship winning team. But as the calendar turned to 2023 and four of those players graduated, he is now the leader of the team.

The Eagles might be a little younger, but they are just as hungry and fundamentally sound as they ever were under coach Anthony Anzalone who has them believing in themselves.

Dom Carbone, who we named the Axcess Preseason Player of the Year, and is among the top players in the region, once again shined on the mound. The Coastal Carolina-commit faced a very talented Comsewogue team that is returning several impact players from last year, and he held them hitless into the sixth inning. He was able to strike out 10 and allow just two hits in the 5-1 victory.

Carbone’s counterpart was another southpaw, junior Carson McCaffrey who put himself on the map by allowing just 4 hits through his first three outings to start his varsity career last year. He ran into immediate trouble today in the first inning when he walked Carbone and AJ Aschettino with two outs. After striking out Justin Bono our the second out of the inning, Jeremy Graham hit one hard past the second baseman to score two runs. The next batter, Johnny Bohlman, ripped an RBI single to right field to make it a 3-0 lead. McCaffrey ended up retiring Anthony Viggiano to end the inning.

Carbone came out firing, as he struck out two batters in the first inning – including Comsewogue’s talented duo, Kevin Schnupp Jr and Matt Nowlan.

The pitchers exchanged zeros until the fourth inning when Rocky Point’s bats went back to work. Tyler Maggio got things going with a double down the left field line. After the next two batters were retired, Dom Viggiano ripped an RBI double to make it 4-0 and AJ Aschettino’s RBI single by it 5-0.

At that point, the game was essentially out of reach with the way Carbone was firing the baseball.

He wound up allowing his first hit of the game in the sixth inning to Schnupp, but he was erased on a 6-4-3 double play to the next batter.

In the home half of the seventh inning, Carbone was looking to start what he finished. The game was briefly extended when he struck out a batter but the dropped third strike allowed him to reach. Visibly upset, he reared back and struck out the next batter for his 10th K of the game.

Carbone and Rocky Point secured the victory, they improved to 5-2 on the season.
