Calhoun Slugs Their Way to a Big Opening Day Victory Over Long Beach

by Eddie Lennon

Calhoun, the 2022 Class A Long Island champions, picked up in 2023 right where they left off in 2022. They opened the season with an overpowering 21-2 win over Long Beach. Calhoun made it clear that they are prepared to defend their title and look to repeat.

PJ Kakalos took the mound for Calhoun while Dylan Cantwell was on the hill for Long Beach. Fairfield-commit Matt Kalfas was an early spark plug for Calhoun’s offense, singling to left and stealing second in the first. This set up Charlie Imhof, a Molloy-commit, to get his tremendous day started. Imhof drove in Kalfas to take an early lead. Long Beach tied it up in the second inning when Alonso Espinet drove in the tying run with a single to left. The second was scoreless, mainly thanks to a diving, full-extension catch by Long Beach’s second baseman Aidan Cardo and his ability to get the runner at second kept the game tight through two.

Things took a major turn in the 3rd when Calhoun’s bats refused to cool down.

Everybody on Calhoun was making solid contact and driving the ball in the third inning. Calhoun put up 15 runs in the bottom of the third. Imhof went 2-for-2 with 2 runs scored in the 3rd inning with an RBI double and then a three-run blast to centerfield in his second at-bat of the inning. SS Brian Sanchez had a three-run double in the third as well. Sanchez also had a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the 4th to make it 21-2.

Kakalos earned the win for Calhoun. He tossed four innings, striking out 3. He was very consistent with his location and kept the ball in the zone. He mixed up his pitch selection well.

Calhoun made it clear that they are prepared to defend their title and look to repeat. Imhof, Sanchez, and the rest of the Calhoun Colts look to keep the momentum going as they continue their series against Long Beach on Tuesday March 28.
