Saturday College Recap (3/25) Powered by Orlin & Cohen

by Andy Smith

It was awful weather yesterday, and most teams preemptively rescheduled their games to a double header Friday or Sunday. Hofstra was on the road, and Maritime was able to get their DH in at home. Here’s how it went down.

Division-I:

Hofstra 4, North Carolina A&T 10

The Aggies grabbed an early lead in the opening frame off a sacrifice fly.  The Pride then tallied three runs in the following frame which was kickstarted by a two-run RBI double by center fielder Dylan Palmer and capped off with an RBI base on balls.  North Carolina A&T tied up the score in the bottom half of the inning with a fielder’s choice and an RBI double by third baseman Court Maynard.  Hofstra tallied another run and closed the gap to just one run in the fourth thanks to an RBI double by left fielder Will Kennedy.  The Aggies took control in the bottom half of the fourth by tallying five runs and did not look back.  A three-run blast by left fielder Cameran Brantley did most of the damage.  North Carolina tacked on two more runs in the fifth off a two-run RBI double by Maynard who finished with three hits and three RBIs.  The Pride look to avoid a series sweep Sunday at 1:00PM EST.

Division-III:

Maritime

Game 1: Maritime 12, SUNY Poly 13

Game 2: Maritime 10, SUNY Poly 3

Maritime tallied two runs in the opening frame in this offensive showcase with an RBI base on balls and a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats grabbed the lead in the second, putting up three runs which was highlighted by a solo blast by first baseman Carter Romansky. The Privateers tied the game in the bottom half by scoring on a wild pitch. Romansky went yard again in the third, this time with a two-run shot to extend the Poly lead to two. Maritime once again tied up the score in the same frame with a solo home run by shortstop Jaden Shea and a sacrifice fly. The Privateers grabbed the lead in the fourth off a two-run RBI knock from designated hitter Christian Ark. The Wildcats scored once in the fifth off an RBI single from third baseman Ryan Pelton, and then tallied four in the sixth which was capped off with a two-run blast by Pelton. Ark got Maritime back on the scoresheet in the sixth and closed the Poly lead to just one with a two-run RBI double. Designated hitter Alexander Bonacci hit a three-run homer in the seventh which increased the Poly lead to four. Maritime continued to claw back, but fell one run short of completing the comeback in the seventh. Two home runs, one each by third baseman Freddy Forgione (2 RBI) and first baseman Rob Copozzi put a scare into Poly, but it just wasn’t enough.

The Privateers once again jumped out to a first inning lead in the second game, this time via a wild pitch and a fielder’s choice. The Privateers got another run on the board in the second with an RBI double from Anthony Madigan. Maritime then launched two solo shots in the third, one each by left fielder Chris Felder and center fielder Matt Milone.  Poly got on the board in the fourth via an RBI double from Romansky. Copozzi hit an RBI double in the fourth which increased the Maritime lead to five. Then, Madigan sent a three-run long ball over the fence in the fifth. Poly got two more runs on the board in the sixth off a balk and a wild pitch. Shea then lined an RBI double in the bottom half of the sixth to put up the tenth run of the game. Brandon Stanley improved to 5-0 on the season with another strong start tallying eight punchouts across five innings of three run ball.  Maritime is back at it again tomorrow for another double header, this time against John Jay beginning at 12:00 PM EST.
