Floyd Looking to Build On Last Year’s Playoff Run

William Floyd made some noise in the 2022 postseason as they upset two powerhouse teams in Pat-Med and Sachem East. We covered the latter game, in which they used a six-run inning to shock a talented Sachem East team and advance to the next round. Ultimately, they were defeated by Ward Melville, in a game that took place over the course of two days due to an elongated rain delay.

That team graduated 11 seniors, as is often the case with a large school such as Floyd. Several of those players were impact players such as All-League OF Colin Ross, who is now at St. Thomas Aquinas and was one of the better hitters in the league last year. They also graduated All-League Will Winter, who was a versatile player for them. He is at Cazenovia College. Kevin Ohlsen (Norwich), Riley Lake, Justin Backhaus and Jason King were also graduates. King came out of nowhere and batted .430 and was named All-League.

They return All-League OF Joe LoMonaco, who is entering his 4th year on varsity. He is the younger brother of Nick, who was a standout player for them and graduated in 2019. They also return senior SS Aiden Mehmel.

“He can do a little bit of everything, he’s pretty good at a lot of things,” he said in regards to his skillset.

Aside from them, they have a lot of new players and open spots that will be open for competition. They have a few newcomers that could be impact players for them on the offensive side. Josh Ruiz, Angelo Velez and Jonathan Bowden are three players that coach mentioned.

Their JV team won 12 games last season, which is generally a pretty good indicator of future performance.

Coach noted that their pitching staff will be a strength this season and they are “8-9 deep on the mound.”

Anchoring the rotation is senior southpaw and College of Staten Island-commit Jayden Zayas. Coach stated that he was more of a reliever last season but will be moved into the rotation. He is siting in the low 80s and showed his toughness by escaping a jam to end the Sachem East game.

They also have Jake Sambriski who pitched on varsity last year as a sophomore. He also mentioned sophomore Jack Molini, who is about 6’4 220 lbs and has been up to 84 MPH. Lastly, Dylan Coyle rounds out their main group of starting pitchers.

“We are a young group, but the kids are working hard. We have a lot of question marks in terms of positions but they come to the field every day looking to work and they worked really hard beginning in the fall.”

They will be opening up against Longwood on March 27. They will be in League III with Longwood, Pat-Med, Riverhead, Sachem East and Sachem North.
