This past month, the Philadelphia Phillies made a miraculous run through the potent National League and captured the NL Pennant for the first time since 2009. Despite losing in a thrilling 6-game series to the Houston Astros, it was an incredible stretch for the Fightin’ Phils.
One of the reasons the team was in such good position to make a run was due to the shrewd international signings of Long Island native Sal Agostinelli. The longtime members of the Phillies scouting department is the Director of International signings and was responsible for Ranger Suarez and Seranthony Dominguez (as well as current Astros RHP Hector Neris). Sal has been an integral member of the Phillies organization for over 30 seasons and also signed several of the members of the 2008 World Series championship winning club.
Sal’s son, Anthony, is a senior at Kings Park HS. He recently announced his commitment to attend the College of Staten Island. He will be a key piece for the Kingsmen not only in handling the pitching staff but also providing some punch in the lineup.
I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…
Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose CSI?
My experience with the college recruiting process was long but rewarding because I found the perfect fit for me. I was researching schools and at the time I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay home or go away. I went to a few camps and saw a few campuses. I liked them but didn’t love them. But then Coach Mike Mauro invited me to visit CSI and I loved it. A big reason I chose CSI is the way coach Mauro treated me and made me feel comfortable.
Was baseball always your No. 1 sport?
Baseball for me was always my Number 1 spot. I’ve been playing since I was 6-years-oldand what really kept me going and pursuing the game was my dad coaching me at a very young age and helping me to understand the game. So I didn’t really get into any other sports because I liked it so much and wanted to work at it.
Can you discuss what it’s been like having your father be a professional baseball scout and how it has impacted your love for the game of baseball?
For me, having my dad be a professional scout in the sport I love is awesome. It really made me love it from a very young age because of the opportunities presented to me through his job. I got to go on the field, into the clubhouse and meet all the players. Seeing this at such a young age I thought it was really cool and wanted to be like them – so that lit a fire under me and ultimately made me work harder so I can have a successful career like them.
What are your goals for the upcoming season?
My goals for the upcoming season are the same as the last two – work hard in the gym and get better and stronger for the upcoming season.
What’s the best experience you’ve had on a baseball field?
During the school season when I went 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs and caught one of my good friends, Ryan Callahan, who I will be playing against in college.
Do you work with any private instructors?
I work with catching instructor Kyle Brennan. He’s a talented guy that knows what he’s talking about and what I need to get better on every time I see him.
