by Brian Honka

The Tri-State Arsenal took on the Long Island Scouts Academy in a Boys of Summer Fall season Varsity doubleheader.

In game one, the Arsenal sent Michael O’Grady to the mound to take on Stevie Hernandez of the Scouts.

The Arsenal would get on the board first after a leadoff single up the middle from Patrick Scarangella who used his speed to take second and then advance to third on a passed ball. Michael Merolla would hit a ground ball to the second baseman who chose to take the out at first giving Arsenal a 1-0 lead.

Both teams would trade scoreless inning after scoreless inning until the bottom of the 4th.

Back-to-back walks to start the inning set up the Scouts. The runners would move to second and third on a ground ball to the right side of the infield. With 1 out and up a run, the Arsenal brought the infield in to try and cut the runner down at home. Eric Schulteisz would hit a hard groundball to the shortstop which got passed him allowing the runner from third to score easily tying the game at 1.

In the 5th inning, the Scouts would put the game away with great at-bat after great at-bat working walks and putting the ball in play resulting in single after single. Larry Wasek would rip a 2-run single into the right-center gap to make the score 7-1.

The game would be called due to the time limit in the middle of the inning and the Scouts would win game 1 with a score of 8-1.

Game 2 saw Connor Saville of the Scouts take on Joseph Lembo of the Arsenal.

The Scouts would pick up right where they left off and get 2 runs in the first inning thanks to an RBI single to right from Scott Whitbeck and then a sac fly to centerfield made it 2-0.

Despite both starters having shaky first innings they would settle down and keep the game at 2-0 thanks to some great defensive plays from both teams to keep runners in scoring position from scoring.

In the 6th inning, the Scouts would add to their lead thanks to an RBI triple down the right field line from Scott Whitbeck which was followed up with an RBI triple down the left field line off the bat of Eric Schulteisz. Tommy Barone would hit a single into the hole on the right side of the infield to score another run and give the scouts a 5-0 lead.

The Arsenal wouldn’t go down without a fight as they would get a run back in the bottom of the 6th inning thanks to a fielder’s choice off the bat of Michael O’Grady.

The Arsenal would once again try and come back in the bottom of the 7th inning with a leadoff double into right field from Justin Tighe but that would be the only offense the team had in the inning as the next 3 batters were retired in order.

The Scouts would take game 2 with a score of 5-1.
