Recap of Blue Chip Prospects Unsigned Senior Showcase

With the 2022 season and calendar nearly at its conclusion, high school seniors are preparing for their final season before beginning their collegiate careers.

For those unsigned seniors, however, the priorities are a bit different as they use this time to figure out which school they will be attending. It can be an anxious time. Speaking from experience, I entered my senior year as an uncommitted player and it wasn’t until November that I made my decision to attend to Farmingdale State College.

There was roughly 40 players in attendance and several college coaches in attendance.

After the players ran their 60-yard dash, the defense portion of the workout began. Catchers showed their arms throwing to second base on steal attempts and bunts. Infielders and outfielders showcased themselves as well with a number of players standing out.

A round of BP followed before the players split into teams and played a game. Here are some observations:

Position Players

TJ Scannevin (Kings Park 2023)

Scannevin is an athletic outfielder that has performed well at the varsity level already – batting .339 last season for Andrew Abreu’s squad. He figures to be a big piece for them this season as well. He is a gritty player that could help many teams. Solid swing that generates line drives consistently – more so than any other play.

Pat Fitzgerald (Connetquot 2023)

In the above video you can see what I saw. Line drive to right center, line drive to left center and line drive to straight away left. Fitzgerald put some good swings on the ball and showed a strong arm in the outfield.

Charlie Leo (Mepham 2023)

Leo had the second hard throw of any outfielder at 79 MPH and also can be an impact pitcher on the mound. Nice, fluid mechanics and was in the 79-81 MPH range with command of his fastball, curve and changeup. Can be a starter at the Div-III level and should have a big year for Mepham in 2023.

Stephen Ierides (Seaford 2023) easily had the best showing of any catcher. His 2.0 pop was the best and they were also very accurate throws. That’s enough of a reason to warrant inclusion on this list and he should find a home soon.

Mattingly Goldstein (Babylon 2023) is a natural born hitter. Really liked him round of BP. He played a solid third base, and could be an immediate impact player at the Division-III level. I expect him to have a big school season as well.

Pitchers:

Ryan Carroll (Kellenberg 2023)

Easily the highest upside pitcher in attendance considering his size. He was 81-84 MPH. Command was not his best, but any coach can see the potential there. A UCL set him back a year but he is back to 100%.

Tyler Mezadurian (Walt Whitman 2023)

He threw strikes with his fastball and breaking ball and threw with conviction. Definitely a college pitcher in my eyes and could be lights-out for Walt Whitman this upcoming year.

Jonathan Kortright (East Islip 2023)

The prototypical crafty lefty, Kortright was not overpowering but he threw strikes to all quadrants of the strike zone. He also can confound hitters with his slow breaking ball that generates plenty of swing & miss plus weak contact. The type of pitcher you need to watch a full game to appreciate.

Shawn Ryan (Islip 2023)

Was very impressed with the delivery and command. He is a top of the rotation varsity starter and with a fastball that touched 84, I think he can be a Division-II reliever or Division-III starter.

Daniel Madsen (Babylon 2023)

Madsen was lights-out during the 2022 season with Babylon. He pounds the zone, keeps hitters off balance and has just enough with the fastball to get swings & misses. Should be able to start at the Division-III level.
