It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Philadelphia Phillies minor leaguer and Long Island native Corey Phelan at the age of 20. It is truly devastating news, as the young Harborfields grad had dealt with cancer this year and unfortunately lost his battle.
Phelan flourished two years ago and signed as an undrafted free agent out of high school after the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID. The southpaw made five relief appearances in 2021 and posted a stellar 0.93 ERA.
He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April 2022 and his teammates and friends rallied behind him and his positive attitude and infectious spirit. He was motivated to return to the field in 2023.
The Long Island baseball community grieves with the Phelan family during this tragic time and our thoughts and prayers are with them.
