Sean Fanning, Yeti Baseball Sweep Saturday Double Header

It was two distinctly different types of games but both yielded the same result as Yeti Baseball swept a double header from LI Titans Robles this afternoon by the scores of 6-5 (6 innings) and 2-0. Both teams are battling it out in the 15u National standings in the LI Boys of Summer, although today’s results did create some separation.

In Game 1, the pitching match up was Connor Catania for Yeti Baseball and Dylan Cerone for LI Titans.

In the top of the 1st, Yeti struck first with a pair of runs. The first came on a wild pitch that scored Nick Fiorentino and an RBI single to right field by Sean Fanning (much more on him later).

Catania was dominant for the early portion of the game. He struck out three in the first inning – working around a leadoff walk and stolen base by Brayden Hromada.

Yeti added a run in the second on an RBI single by Andrew Carbonara to score Bobby Eck.

In the bottom of the third, the Titans broke through with two runs without the benefit of a hit to the outfield. Tyler Azarieh reached on an E5 to get things going. After a flyout to right, Joe Hiller reached on an infield single to short. After a popout to second base, an E4 allowed the first run to score and an E3 allowed another run to score during a rundown. Just like that, it was a new game. Catania was able notch his sixth strikeout of the game to end the third inning.

The Titans made a pitching change in the fourth bringing in Tyler Azarieh and he was able to avoid any damage to keep the game 3-2 and allow his team a chance to come back. That’s exactly what they did in the fourth when a sac fly by Azarieh scored Brady McGowan to tie the game up.

The lead did not last long as Bobby Eck hit an RBI single to center to score Mike Derosa, who had hit a two-out double to get himself into scoring position. Azarieh escaped further damage with a ground out to shortstop to end the inning.

Once again the lead did not last as the Titans got a leadoff single by Joe Hiller to center followed by a single by Joe Scarabino to put the tying run in scoring position. After back-to-back strikeouts, a wild pitch scored Hiller to tie the game. Andrew Asaro came through with two-out RBI single to make it 5-4.

Yeti Baseball went to the bullpen to call on Andrew Carbonara who struck out the next batter to end the jam.

Facing defeat, Yet Baseball was able to step up. Carbonara helped himself with a leadoff double to get the inning started. A ground out to third was the first out, but Nick Friscia singled to put runner’s on the corners. A short fly out to left field was not deep enough to get the run in and suddenly Yeti was faced with their final out. A passed ball, however, allowed the tying run to score and made it a 5-5 ballgame. Not content, Dylan Ruland blooped an RBI single to right field to score the go-ahead run and make it a 6-5 ballgame.

Carbonara went back out for the home half of the inning, worked around a two-out double to end the game on a pop out to first base. The game ended after reaching the 1 hour, 50 minute time limit.

Game 2

If you blinked you might’ve missed an inning or two as Yeti’s LHP Sean Fanning (Smithtown East 2025) was brilliant in this game. He set the Titans down 1-2-3 in the first inning with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to center field.

He worked around a one-out single in the second inning by Joe Scarabino with a pair of strikeouts.

His offense went to work in the home half of the second inning started by Connor Catania who tripled over the right fielder’s head to get things going. He scored on an RBI ground out by Dylan Ruland to get Yeti on the board. That lead extended to 2-0 on a dropped third strike which allowed pinch runner Nick Friscia score on the throw to first.

That was more than enough for the southpaw who worked efficiently and effectively.

In total, Fanning needed just 75 pitches to fire the complete game shutout. He struck out 8 batters, scattered five hits and most impressively, threw 84 percent of his pitches for strikes.

The regular season is now complete and Yeti will hope to keep their momentum going into the playoffs.
