Q & A With Anthony Scarabino

When people ask how programs like Connetquot are also to continually produce winning seasons year-after-year, it starts with the dedication of the players and coaches at the youth level. During the shutdown season of 2020, I heard about how good the freshman class at Connetquot was and that they would be a force in a couple years. That came to fruition as the T-Birds captured their League Championship yet again before losing in the postseason to Smithtown West in a rain-soaked two-day game.

One of their biggest contributors was junior captain Anthony Scarabino who was named Team MVP, All-League and All-County. He batted .436 over 23 games with a .563 OPS, .551 SLG 1.114 OPS, 34 hits, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 27 RBIs, 34 runs, 18 walks and 11 stolen bases.

The do-it-all outfielder recently announced his verbal commitment to the University at Albany. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Can you discuss your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Albany?

Overall, my college recruiting process worked out very well for me. At times it became stressful but with the help of Jim Clark and Tom Downey of the Long Island Titans the process became much easier for me. I also had a lot of guidance from my coaches Casey and Ron McKay. From the time I spoke with Coach Kaier and Coach Mueller to seeing the campus and learning about the program, I knew Albany was the perfect fit for me.

Who are some people that have had a positive impact on your career?

A lot of people have helped me become the player and person I am today. My parents have sacrificed a lot for me by driving me to all my practices, games and paying for anything I’ve needed since I was little. Another influential person in my career is my first ever baseball coach, Coach Richie Heyder. He has taught me so much about the game and how to have fun while playing. I will always cherish the memories and lessons while playing for the St. Joseph’s Angels.

What does it mean to be part of the Connetquot baseball program?

There is a lot of pride and dedication that goes into being part of Connetquot baseball. The bond that is first formed with your teammates from playing together for years before high school makes it much easier to create a bond quickly even though the team is coming from two different middle schools. The winning expectation in the program that has been kept there for many years would not be possible without the hard work of coach Dwayne Page and coach Marc Wangenstein who have helped me through each season and the adversity that comes with it.

What are you focusing on improving this offseason?

This summer I have been improving my game with the help of the Long Island Titans. But this offseason, I will be working on getting faster and stronger. Also I will be working on my swing and making any adjustments needed.

Do you work with any private instructors?

Yes, I work with my hitting and fielding instructor Chris Scura at Matt Giuliano’s Play Like a Pro. He has helped me these past few years to reach the next level in my game by simplifying my swing and improving my balance. He has also guided me to have a better approach in the box. Chris has significantly helped me both on-and-off the field as player.

What’s the best baseball trip you’ve been on?

The best baseball trip I’ve been on was Cooperstown when I was 12 years old. This is something that everyone looks forward to doing. Staying in one room with your team, being able to walk to all your games and hitting 200 foot home runs is an experience I’ll never forget.
