Q & A With Nicholas Delvecchio

Holy Trinity entered 2022 with a talented roster – albeit a younger one. Coming off a difficult season, they were hoping that their large group of 2023s and 2024s gained valuable experience from that 2021 season. Turns out, that’s exactly what happened. Led by one of the best pitchers on Long Island in Sadier Vicioso, they were able to go toe-to-toe against any team during the regular season. Ultimately, they lost in the playoffs to St. John the Baptist but it was a successful season for the program. Additionally, their position players all matured quickly – notably catcher Tyler Cook (Catcher of the Year), infielders Sebastian Velazquez and Nicholas Delvecchio. The latter just announced his verbal commitment to Long Island University. He plays his summer ball for Knights Nation – MXE Academy and will enter his senior year as one of the early candidates for Player of the Year.

I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose LIU?

The college recruiting process was a long process that took time but was worth the wait. LIU felt like the best place for me to continue my baseball career. I believe that I will have an opportunity to make an impact and compete for championships. The coaching staff is made up of a great group of guys who care for their players. As a team, they are coming off a conference championship, and an NCAA appearance and I can’t wait to be a part of the LIU program.

Who are some people that have had a positive impact on your career?

First and foremost, God. Also, my brother Chris, sister Joanna and my grandparents for their continued support throughout. My high school coach Dan Luisi, who has helped me develop into the player I am today. My hitting coach, Brad Jackson, who I have been with since 8-years-old. He has taught me everything anyone can imagine. He has been there through the ups and has been a great person to look up to. Next is Cornell, who is my strength and conditioning coach. He has pushed me to become a better athlete and better version of myself. The Knight Nation organization and Coach Giac for teaching me how to grow up as a person and teach me the little things that go a long way. Joe Palumbo for always having my back through the good and bad. Finally, my parents for believing in me and letting me chase my goals. They have always been my biggest fans.

Can you discuss your time at Holy Trinity HS and what Coach Luisi has done to help build the program?

My last two years at Holy Trinity have been great. Academically I have been challenged in the classroom and have had great teachers and made great friends. Athletically, we went from the bottom to a team on the rise all within a year and now have a legit opportunity to win the championship next year. Coach Luisi has been instrumental in building our team and instilling confidence in all of us. For me personally, he has been a mentor and a coach. I have learned so much in the last two years about the game of baseball and more improtantly how to be a good human being with him as my role model. I can’t wait to start my senior year and finish what we started.

Who were some key players for Holy Trinity this past year?

Our ace Sadier was a huge game changer throughout the season. He pitched every big game and delivered every time.

Sophomore Tyler Cook was a big factor throughout the season. He was clutch all year and won Catcher of the Year.

Third baseman and pitcher Sebastian Velazquez who was our leader and number 2 on the mound.

Also big factors who will have a monster year are Kyle Kozlowski, Brian Zweigbaum, Nico Quiroz, Andrew Heppner, Sean Maddi and Gabe Klarakaitis.

What did you work on in the offseason to improve your game?

Used MXE and 1MR training facilities to work on baseball and strength & conditioning. Also changed my diet and ran hills almost everyday to get faster.

Favorite MLB Player?

Francisco Lindor. Even though I’m a Yankee fan I love the way he plays the game. He plays the game with excitment. He is also always smiling and having fun playing the game of baseball.
