The second game of a doubleheader featuring the Sag Harbor Whalers and Riverhead Tomcats took place at Veteran’s Memorial Park Friday afternoon. Both teams are in the top three in the Hamptons League standings, so it was expected to be a competitive game.
The pitching matchup featured two of the best pitchers statistically in the entire league in Jared Restmeyer of the Tomcats and Will Pacheco of the Whalers. Both pitchers have an ERA under 1.00 as of the conclusion of this game, which meant we were in store for a pitchers’ duel.
Restmeyer game out of the gate pounding the strike zone, inducing a groundout to shortstop from Rhode Island College junior Cam Santerre, a groundout to second base from Saint Peter’s junior Sam Haney, and a flyout to center field from St. Catharine College senior John Lopez. Pacheco followed that up with a scoreless inning of his own, getting Illinois Springfield junior Asher Bradd to groundout, St. John’s junior Anthony Brienza to groundout to second, and Rutgers sophomore Jason Shockley to pop out.
The second inning was fairly uneventful, however the top of the third inning featured a highlight-reel play when left fielder Jason Shockley threw a perfect one-hopper to second from deep left field to throw out Mike Maher of Wheaton College trying to stretch a single into a double. The bottom of the inning was crucial to the outcome of the game, when Bradd and UMass-Amherst’s Jacob Sloss started the inning with singles, leading to a sacrifice fly from Anthony Brienza later in the inning to give the Tomcats a 1-0 lead.
The score would remain this way the rest of the game. Every pitcher who came in was at the top of their game today, with only one walk allowed for both teams combined. Jared Restmeyer was who really impressed, tossing a complete game three-hitter without allowing a walk and striking out five batters total. The final score was 1-0 with the Tomcats taking the win. The Whalers remain in first place at 11-7 despite losing their last two contests, while the Tomcats improve to 8-10 and move into third place overall in the standings.
