Connecticut Cubs Overpower LI Strong with Big 13-1 Win

by Chris Prystupa

In a matchup between the 13U Connecticut Cubs and the LI Strong, in the Kings Point Challenge tournament hosted by USMMA, the Cubs would end up scoring a lot and often.

In the bottom of the first the Cubs would get the party started with Connor Brice as he singled into center and then moved into scoring position with a stolen base. Conlon Bailey would follow this up with an infield single allowing Brice to score for the game’s first run.

In the second inning the Strong would go quietly in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the frame a passed ball would allow the Cubs to add onto their lead putting them ahead 2-0.

Moving to the top of the third, the LI Strong scratched across their first run of the game on an RBI fielder’s choice by James Schofield cutting the Cubs lead in half 2-1. The Cubs responded with a multitude of runs off of a multitude of hits and walks. A passed ball and RBI singles from Owen Bartoszek and Brice would give the Cubs a 4-1 advantage. The Strong would wind up making a pitching change but the Cubs weren’t done just yet. Conlon Bailey singled home two runs and another passed ball plus would give the Cubs a 9-1 lead. Walker McClure smashed one into left field and ran as fast as he could for an inside the park grand slam putting the game essentially out of reach at 13-1.

The LI Strong strung a couple of hits together in the top of the fourth but couldn’t manage any runs across to keep the game going. That would be all for the offense from both sides as the Connecticut Cubs would go on to win thanks to the mercy rule by a score of 13-1 in four innings. These two teams square off again tomorrow at USMMA’s field with first pitch due to be thrown at 5 p.m.
