Schmidt, Owls Shutout Knights in 15U Memorial Day Clash Championship Game

by Nick Cipolla

The Islip Owls were dominant this morning at Eisenhower Park. They had everything going early and they never took their foot of the gas until the game was over.

There were many contributors in this 8-0 run rule win over Knights Nation today, but none shined brighter than Jaden Schmidt. Schmidt pitched a gem today, a complete game (5 inning), 2 hit Shutout with 6 strikeouts en route to a Memorial Day victory.

The Owls offense was on the attack early and often in this one. Jaden Schmidt helped his own cause in the bottom of the first, grounding into a fielder’s choice but scoring the game’s first run in the process.

In the bottom of the second, Michael Sassone hit a 2 out RBI single to make it 2-0 Owls. The very next batter, Gavin Veltman, hit a triple to deep left field to make it a 3-0 Owls lead.

In the third inning, Colin Haug hit another Owls Triple into deep left field, Jaden Schmidt helped himself once more as he hit a sac fly to deep left, scoring Haug to make it 4-0 Owls.

The Owls broke it open in the 4th inning, Alex Clampi drew a bases loaded walk to make it 5-0, Thomas Costerelli hit an RBI single up the middle to make it 6-0. Colin Haug grounded into a fielder’s choice, bringing 2 more runs across to make it 8-0 Owls.

Schmidt came back out in the 5th and shut the door on any potential comeback for Knight Nation as he retired the side in the inning and gave his team a run rule victory.
