Massapequa Cyclones Cruise to 18-5 Victory in Memorial Day Clash

by Aaron Rothschild

The second game from Pops Field today featured a bunch of offense between two 10U teams that were aggressive at the plate and came to the plate looking to do damage. The game between the Massapequa Cyclones and the Sharks Baseball Academy finished by a final score of 18-5 Cyclone victory.

Starting on the bump for the Sharks was Nicholas Bruno and he would go on to throw a scoreless first inning working around an error. In the bottom half of the inning Sharks would strike first after a lead off triple by Marcelo Patron, he would be driven in by Carter Phillips soon after to give the Sharks the early lead.

Bruno would come out to start the second and that is when the Cyclones began to catch fire, a couple of walks would lead to a sac fly by Joey LaBella giving the Cyclones a 2-1 lead. Chase Ferri would immediately follow that up with an RBI double, shortly after Ryan Love would drive in two more with a double making it 5-1. The next batter Charlie Puricelli would step up and mash a 3-run home run to left center putting the exclamation point on the inning making it a 8-1 ball game. Cyclones started Chase Ferri would come back onto the mound and throw a shutdown second inning to maintain the lead.

The third would be very similar to the previous inning for the Cyclones as they faced new pitcher Rory Massa, Massa would throw strikes but the Cyclones bats were heating up, after a couple base hits a three run triple by Joey Labella would make it an 11-1 game, the Cyclones would go on to tack on two more before the inning would end. The Sharks would stay resilient against the Cyclones new pitcher Chase Ferri and score 2 more to avoid the run rule including an RBI single by Carsen Bayer to make it a 13-3 game heading into the fourth.

In the fourth Maya would settle down and only allow one  run on an RBI single by Daniel Moreno. The Sharks would show some more heart and score two in the bottom half of the inning on a steal of home by Patron making it 14-5.

In the fifth and final inning due to time the Cyclones would go on to score four more after a couple  of walks and a hit by pitch from new pitcher Carsen Bayer. He would be taken out for Patron who would close the door with two strikeouts. Ferri would close the door with a scoreless bottom half of the inning and that would lead to the final score of 18-5.

All in all it was a fun game that included lots of great hitting and defense from two teams that were enjoyable to watch, but it was the Cyclones and their bats who would come out on top.
