Islip Owls Start Memorial Day Weekend Tournament Off Strong With 9-2 Win

by Chris Prystupa

The 15U Islip Owls and Batting 1.000 Seminoles met today at Eisenhower Park for their first games in the East Coast Youth Baseball Memorial Day Clash

In the top of the first inning the Seminoles got the scoring started right away with E3 off Owls right handed pitcher Centauro. In the bottom half of the frame the Seminoles sent southpaw Montes to the mound to battle the Owls. The Seminoles defended their 1-0 lead with a heads up play by the second baseman Barbetta, who nailed a runner breaking for the plate on a delayed steal attempt. With two men on, Montes would strand those runners ending the inning with a strikeout.

The score would remain 1-0 until the bottom of the second inning where the Owls tied the game on a RBI double from Ciampi. They then proceeded to take a 2-1 lead courtesy of Haug who lifted a ball to the outfield for a sacrifice fly. The game would remain 2-1 through another two innings.

With a pitching change in the bottom of the fifth, Castellani relieved Montes with the bases loaded and the Owls got to work. Costarelli drove in a pair of runs on a RBI single through the left side of the infield making it a 4-1 Owls lead. Shortly after that, Haug beat out an infield single allowing a run to score, extending the Owls lead to 5-1.

In the top of the sixth inning the Seminoles would scratch another run across as Diaz would bring in a run with an RBI single but it ultimately wouldn’t be enough. The Owls responded in the bottom half of the sixth with more runs as Fioresi blooped one into left for two RBIs padding the lead making it 7-2. The Seminoles would make another pitching change and summon Windisch out of the bullpen. The next batter, Ciampi, would beat out an infield single and Costarelli ripped an RBI single allowing two more runs to come in, furthering the Owls lead to 9-2. After that play the game reached the one hour and fifty minute time limit. With the Owls being up to bat, the game would drop dead leaving them with the victory.
