Ryan Karman Fires 3-Hit Shutout To Propel Sayville Into Conference IV Finals

The perfect remedy to bounce back from a tough loss is to get back on your home field with your ace on the bump.

Playing in a Conference IV elimination game, Sayville sent RHP Ryan Karman to the mound against Brady Clark and the red-hot Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms. As he has done all season, Karman was lights-out. With the exception of hitting the first two batters of the game, he was dominant – taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finishing with a three-hit shutout in an 8- win for the Golden Flashes.

The crowd was absolutely packed with fans of both schools being that there is only 3.1 miles separating the two schools.

Early on, it appeared that the Phantoms would be riding the momentum of their previous wins against Shoreham-Wading River and Miller Place. Trey McGowan and Liam Stemmler were both hit by pitches to put the middle of the order up for BBP. Starting pitcher, Brady Clark, stepped in and squared to bunt with one strike but did not get it down and opted to swing away with two strikes. Karman struck him out for the first out and then induced an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP against cleanup hitter Max May to end the threat.

Clark fired a 1-2-3 inning of his own in the first inning including a strikeout of West Point-commit Jack Quinlan. The game swung dramatically after that moment and Sayville took all the momentum.

In the bottom of the second, although they didn’t score, Sayville did threat with back-to-back singles to start the inning by Ryan Leniec and Tommy Marino. BBP caught a break when Leniec strayed too far from the second base bag and was thrown out by catcher Logan Robertson. Clark wound up striking out AJ Capuano and inducing a pop out to Michael Argenziano.

Karman went back out and worked around a one-out walk issued to Trey McGowan for another hitless inning.

Sayville finally broke through in the third when they got a one-out hit by Michael Milo and took advantage of what could’ve been a 4-6-3 DP, which turned out to allow both runners to reach safely. Ryan Hillery ripped an RBI single to right and the throw got past the catcher to allowed Mack Murtha to score and make it 2-0 in favor of Sayville. They added another run on an RBI single by Ryan Leniec to make it 3-0.

BBP briefly threatened in the third when an E5 allowed Max May to reach safely and a walk issued to Brendan Most brought the potential tying run to the plate. A bunt was popped up and caught by Karman and then a flyout to right and a ground out to third ended the threat.

The Golden Flashes’ bats went back to work in the fifth.

Mack Murtha got things started with a one-out opposite field double. Following an E6, Jack Quinlan crushed a long two-run HR to left center to make it 6-0 and blow the game open.

Karman finally allowed some hits in the sixth. Max May, Matt Lombardo and Ryan Costa all singled to load the bases, but a first-pitch ground out to shortstop ended the jam.

Liam Stemmler took the mound in the sixth and Sayville added a pair of runs to make it 8-0. Karman slammed the door shut in the seventh for the CG, 3-hit shutout to set up another date with Mount Sinai today – the team that defeated them on Saturday. Sayville will need to win twice, while Mount Sinai will need to win once to recapture the Conference IV title.
