Saturday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

As the college baseball season continues into its second weekend, local teams got some more action. Stony Brook University, St. John’s University, Fordham University, Long Island University, Molloy College, Queens College, and the United States Merchant Marine Academy all played today.

Division I:

Stony Brook University 3, University of South Florida 9

After Stony Brook went scoreless in the top of the first, South Florida wasted no time taking the lead, scoring three runs in the inning thanks to a single from Daniel Cantu and a double from Keanu Jacobs-Guishard.

Stony Brook got on the board in the third off of an RBI single from Stanton Leuthner, but USF struck right back, as Joaquin Monque hit his first home run of the season, extending their lead to 5-1.

After a pair of scoreless innings from either team, Stony Brook continued to fight back, scoring two runs in the 6th inning to cut South Florida’s lead to 5-3. Evan Giordano scored on an error, and Shane Paradine came across on an RBI groundout from Brett Paulsen.

South Florida got out of the jam and put a damper on Stony Brook’s comeback hopes in the 7th inning, scoring three runs and pushing the lead to 8-3. They tacked on another insurance run in the 8th, leading to the final score of 9-3.

Josh O’Neill took the loss for Stony Brook, allowing four runs in his inning, and Brad Lord took the win for South Florida.

St. John’s University 3, University of Oregon 16

Oregon picked up right where they left off from their 23-run outburst on Friday, scoring another 11 runs in the first two innings of their Saturday game against St. John’s. Highlights included a solo home run from Brennan Malone and a three-run home run from Colby Shade. Shade had a great day at the plate, going 4-4 with four RBIs.

St. John’s avoided the shutout in the 4th inning, as Jackson Tucker took a bases-loaded walk to bring in Jayson Kramer. They scored their other two runs for the day in the 6th inning, as Tucker had an RBI single and David Glancy added another RBI single.

It was too little, too late though, As Oregon continued to pile it on, scoring three more in the 8th inning to push the lead to 16-3.

Ben Adams pitched 4.1 innings for St. Johns, taking the loss and allowing 12 runs. Andrew Mosiello earned the win for Oregon, allowing one run in five innings of work.

Fordham University 2, Virginia Tech University 8

Virginia Tech took an early lead in this one and never relinquished it, opening up the game with four unanswered runs in the first three innings. Fordham couldn’t figure out Eduardo Malinowski, as he had a three hit day, including an RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the third inning. Conor Hartigan also drove in multiple runs early on, providing a pair of RBI singles in the first and third innings.

Despite only scoring two runs, Fordham had a well-spread out offensive attack, collecting seven hits from seven different players. Zach Selinger provided the only scoring for Fordham today, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

The remainder of the game was controlled by Virginia Tech, as they added four more runs, including a two-run home run from Tanner Schobel and another RBI for Hartigan, this time on a sacrifice fly.

EY Brooks pitched solid in the loss, allowing four earned runs and striking out four batters in five innings. Henry Weycker got the win for Virginia Tech, pitching three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Long Island University 2, Washington State University 9

Long Island finished their four-game set against Washington State University with a loss, giving Washington State the series win; three games to one.

Long Island got out to a good start, holding Washington State scoreless in the first two innings and getting two runs of their own to take a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning. Michael Edelmen hit an RBI single in the third and Seth Surrett took advantage of a throwing error from Washington State catcher Will Cresswell to give Long Island their second run.

Washington State began to wake up in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting on the board with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch for Elijah Hainline, cutting Long Island’s lead to one. Washington State broke out in the fifth, as Jacob McKeon tied the game with an RBI double and Jack Smith gave them the lead with an RBI single.

Washington State added more insurance in the 6th and 7th innings, adding a total of five more runs to give them a 9-2 lead that they would hold onto for the rest of the game. Hainline added the last blow for Washington State, with a two-run home run gave him a team-leading three RBIs for the day. While he didn’t drive a run or score in the game, Kyle Russell was the only player for Washington State with a multi-hit game, going 3-5. Surrett and Christopher Wasson had multi-hit days for Long Island, going 2-3 and 2-4, respectively.

Ryan Neuweiler struggled out of the bullpen for Long Island, allowing five earned runs and taking the loss. Connor Barison was dominant in relief for Washington State, striking out six batters in three shutout innings and earning the win.

Division II:

Molloy College 10, Wilmington University 5

Molloy started off their day with a bang, as Thomas Brady opened up the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Wilmington got a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single from John Mead to cut Molloy’s lead in half.

Things stayed quiet until Molloy busted the game open in the fourth inning with four runs. Chris Einemann got the rally started with a two-RBI single, and Peter Theodorellis and Matt Overton added RBI singles of their own to stretch Molloy’s lead to 6-1.

Molloy added another home run in the 5th inning, this time a solo shot from Chris Peralta. However, Wilmington hadn’t given up yet, as Mead continued his impressive day with a two-RBI triple to cut Molloy’s lead to 7-4.

Molloy immediately responded, stomping out any chance of a Wilmington comeback as Theodorellis and Overton combined for three RBIs to give Molloy a 10-4 lead. Wilmington added another run, but could string anything together, giving Molloy their third win of the season.

Queens College 13, Post University 12

Queens got off to a hot start in this high-scoring affair, putting up four runs in their half of the first inning to take a quick 4-0 lead. Andrew Smith got the scoring going, driving in Jayson Rodopoulos with a groundout. Justin Ventura added on an RBI single and Marc Cisco drove in two runs with a double.

Even after Post got back in the 2nd inning with two runs on two doubles from Hunter Kelle and Evan Cornwel, Queens kept their hot start going and added another six runs in the third inning. Cisco added another two RBIs to his ledger with a single, and was driven in on a two-run home run from Nick Barrerios. Their last two runs scored thanks to some miscommunication between the catcher and the pitcher, as Joseph Leone came across on a wild pitch and Rodopoulos scored on a passed ball.

Down 10-2 in the 5th inning, Post stormed back, scoring seven runs to cut Queens’ lead to just one. Cornwel started the scoring by scoring on an error, and Matt Goehrig made a big dent in their deficit with a three-run home run. Cornwel got another at-bat in the inning, driving in a run with a fielder’s choice, and Kelle scored the last run of the inning when Brycin Herna was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Post completed the comeback in the top of the 6th inning, as Robert Olah hit a game-tying home run. It wouldn’t last long, though, as Queens responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the 6th inning to permanently take the lead. Matt Filip was the catalyst for this inning, driving in the go-ahead run with a single and then scoring on a passed ball. Leone got Queens the eventual game winning run with an RBI double that made it 13-10.

Post attempted another late game comeback, scoring two runs in the last two innings including another home run from Goehring, but it wasn’t enough as Queens held on for the win in an exciting game.

Division III:

USMMA 3, Wells College 5

The USMMA got off to a hot start in their season debut, scoring in each of their first three innings. Tyler Reistetter got the offense started with a sacrifice fly, driving in Joey Zanetti. Zanetti added an RBI of his own in the 2nd inning, driving in Garrett Clapsaddle with a single. Lastly, Zach Coutts drove in Jared Chambers with an RBI single in the 3rd.

During this time, Wells cut into the USMMA lead in the 3rd inning as Max Odum scored on an error from USMMA. Overall, USMMA struggled mightily in the field, committing a total of seven errors.

Both teams went scoreless in the middle innings, as Benny Beratt and Kole Register each pitched well for their teams. Aside from the three runs, Beretta struck out six batters for Wells and Register struck out seven with no earned runs allowed for USMMA.

Wells eventually broke the stalemate in the 7th inning, scoring three runs and taking the lead. Zach Odum and Aaron Izquie scored on errors and Max Odum scored on an RBI groundout from Juan Correa. They added another insurance run in the eighth, as Justin Colin scored on an error, making it a 5-3 game.

Jack Fields and Austin Jorda silenced the USMMA bats, as neither allowed a hit in four combined innings. Billy Todd took the loss for USMMA, as he pitched in Wells’ three-run 7th inning.

Overall, it was a rough day in Division I and Division III for Long Island, but Molloy College and Queens College both picked up wins on Saturday.
