One of the top hitters in the 2023 class has found a home. Sachem North 3B/C announced his commitment to Central Connecticut State University. O’Neill is an athletic player that is a baseball junkie. We featured him as part of our “Up Next” series back in December 2020. He had a terrific sophomore season for the Arrows and even crushed a homer against Charleston-commit Josh Knoth late in the season.
Below is our conversation from last season.
Who are some people that have had a positive influence on your baseball career?
I will always be thankful for my first travel Coach Rob, who believed in me and showed me the fundamentals and the right way to play the game. I would not be where I am now, if not for my current coach Jose and Coach Gabby who have had a huge impact on my baseball career. They always push me to be the best player I can be and have done nothing but better me as an individual and a baseball player.
Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball?
I have always looked up to Derek Jeter and Aaron Judge because I love the way they handle themselves as players and as people.
Why do you wear the Number 25?
My jersey number was always 5 growing up and when I started playing for Beast someone already wore that number. Since Derek Jeter is one of my role models, I took his number 2 and combined it with 5. Now my number is 25.
How did you stay sharp during quarantine?
During quarantine, I made sure to keep up with my school work. I also spent a lot of time outside working on my swing. I lifted weights to keep my body in shape and ready for the 2020 season.
How would you evaluate your 2020 season?
All around, my team and I had a pretty successful season. We won multiple tournaments and overall played like a family. We faced very good competition and were challenged. I would say personally I also had a good season. My pop time, speed, hitting and fielding al developed throughout the year.
How have you enjoyed your time with the Beast?
I have been with the BEAST organization since I was 11. During that time, BEAST has given me multiple opportunities to compete at a high level against very talented teams and improve my overall game.
What has been the biggest thrill of your playing career?
There have been countless intense games and thrilling moments through the years. One moment that stands out to me the most is the NYBC tournament when our team beat the number six ranked team in the country. It was a great game to be a part of and something I will never forget.
Best baseball trip you’ve been on?
Growing up, Cooperstown was one of my most memorable and fun tournaments. I am very much looking forward to playing in Georgia and Florida in the 2021 season.
What do you want to work on this off-season?
This off-season I have been working on my strength and speed. I have also been focusing on improving my defense and offense, getting smoother with my hands and swing. I am excited to see my hard work pay off next year.
Quick preview of Sachem North 2021 season – who are some impact guys?
Some of the impact guys for Sachem North are my sophomore teammates Paul Fiene and Nick DeLuca. They both have great work ethic and passion for the game. Like myself, they have been working very hard in the off-season to improve their game.
Favorite app on your phone?
My favorite app on my phone would either be Instagram or YouTube. They are both great ways to stay updated with sports and watch game highlights.
Favorite musical artist?
My favorite musical artists would be sleepy Hollow and Lil Uzi Vert. I love listening to them while I practice and while I am working out.
Favorite type of food?
Thanksgiving food is my favorite. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and all the sides.
Dream car?
I don’t have a particular dream car, but when I start driving I would like to get a black truck.
Favorite vacation spot?
I love to go on cruises and explore different countries and islands. My favorite spots so far have been the Dominican Republic and Bermuda. I would love the opportunity to play in the Dominican Republic one day.
