14U East River Sharks Defeats Batting 1.000, 5-4

by James Ryder

On Field B at Eisenhower Park on Sunday, some mistakes were made. The 14U East River Sharks and Batting 1.000 Seminoles combined for 8 errors through 5 innings. The rain started to come down in the third inning, which definitely didn’t help either team’s cause.

However, despite the mishaps on display on the defensive side of the ball, the bats were awake for most of the early morning matchup. In the end, it was the away team that came away with the win in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Sharks defeated the Seminoles 5-4.

The game began with two scoreless innings. The starting pitchers for each team avoided trouble early. Spencer Kemler (Seminoles) recorded two strikeouts and a walk through those two frames. He had a 1-2-3 top of the second inning and also turned a double play on a comebacker to end the top of the first. In the same span of time, Liam Talbot (Sharks) gave up two walks but sat down two batters with a pair of K’s.

The Sharks were the first to strike on offense in the top of the third. The first three batters all found their way on base, leading to a bases loaded walk drawn by Sebastian Sencion to make it 1-0. Two batters later, Chris Ramirez broke the game open with a 2 RBI double hit to left-center field, making it 3-0. A fourth run scored during a rare opportunity. A dropped third strike rolled to the backstop, allowing the runner on third to score.

The 4-0 lead was quickly cut in half by the Seminoles in the bottom of the third. Another ball found its way to LCF off the bat of Mike Colon. His double scored two runs, bringing the score to 4-2. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Batting 1.000 tied up the game. Mike Diorio was hit by a pitch to start the inning and came home to score on an error. While attempting to steal third base, the throw sailed into left field and Diorio went all the way home. Jayden Gaghan went to third on the error and scored on the sacrifice bunt from Christopher Flaim.

But the tie didn’t last very long. In the top of the fifth, Win Nangle drew the leadoff walk. He stole second base and advanced to third when the attempt to pick him off got into shallow CF. Nangle scored on a wild pitch.

Brian Kapfer came in to close the game in the bottom of the fifth. He got the save and struck out one batter. Final Score: Sharks 5, Seminoles 4.
