Beast Red Holds off B1000 Seminoles, 2-1

by Gabe Zoda

There was a fire in the Beast’s eyes yesterday and it allowed them to overcome a disadvantage and turn it slightly into their favor. As the season winds down in the LI Boys of Summer PG Collegiate League season, the Beast Red played against B1000 Seminoles Ferriggi.

In a day slotted for a DH, they ended up playing only one game to 9 innings due to a lack of players. This lack of players would be an issue for both sides but one team suffered more than the other.

That team would be the Beast Red squad as they would play a majority of the game with 7 players. The Seminoles had 9 so they could field a team but the Beast ended up playing this baseball game with a total of 5 fielders, not including the pitcher and catcher.

This setup was not favorable but for some reason, it seemed to be almost perfect. The Beast Red, although being undermanned, ended up winning this game by a score of 2-1. The pitching for the Beast Red was able to lock things down and get them out of countless spots throughout the game.

This win wouldn’t be without adversity though as obviously they were undermanned, but they also would allow the Seminoles to get on the Board first.

This run would come in the bottom of the second inning and would give the Seminoles a 1-0 start to the game.

This run was manufactured off of 2 back to back hits. The first one being from Nick Ramos. He singled to lead off the inning and is looking to get back into his groove as he hasn’t been having the best summer according to his standards. This hit hopefully starts something up.

The next batter would bring him all the way from 1st to score as Jack Prendergast launched a ball down the third base line to the french at East Islip HS.

Since the Beast only had 2 outfielders, this ball placement was very good and allowed for enough time for Ramos to come in to score.

With 1 out in the inning, the Seminoles went for a sac fly play but was shut down as Kyle Colleluori got the putout in the outfield and made a near perfect throw to the plate to stop the run from coming in.

It seemed as if that was the moment the momentum changed and the Beast Red squad would take full advantage of it.

The top of the 3rd is when the beast would pounce and use the momentum from defense into offense.

The offense would be from 1 person as well. That man was Joe Patane, who had himself a 3 hit game. One of these hits was an RBI 2B to tie up the ballgame. He would drive in Ethan Grover (who reached on a walk).

Joe Patane also would come around to score the 2nd run as well when he scored on a sac fly later in the inning. These two runs would be all they needed to secure the victory but they wouldn’t have been able to do it without the guys on the mound.

Josh Dannenberg was the starting pitcher and threw for 7 innings and allowed 1 run. His biggest innings were in the 4th and 5th. In both of these innings, he would get out of tough spots with the Seminoles in scoring position.

The 5th inning had the B1000 Seminoles with a Bases loaded opportunity that Dannenberg was able to get out of.

The next arm that was deployed would also finish the game. They didn’t have a lot of options in the relief as they still had less players than positions to fill on the field.

Their choice ended up being Colleluori, and it wouldn’t be a bad one. Kyle would also shut the door many times.

The Beast Red defense made every play behind their pitchers and seemed to be in the perfect positions at all times, which made coach BIlly Reidel laugh many times and made the comment that they should play with 7 guys every game because of how perfect everything was going.

The Beast Red squad ended up taking the game 2-1 and leaving with smiles on their faces from the bizarre victory that they took home. Their next games are on Friday and Saturday when they play double headers against the LIB Tides and then play the Seminoles once again.
