Longwood RHP Tommy Ventimiglia was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 18th round of the MLB Draft. He was the first Longwood player to get drafted since Bryan Hansen in 2001.
Ventimiglia, a 6’4 RHP, dominated League I as a sophomore in 2019 (0.28 ERA) and committed to Stony Brook following the season. His star has risen since and was considered one the top pitchers on Long Island entering 2020. After the cancellation of the season, he was able to put together a huge summer pitching for LI Titans-Quattrini – part of a vaunted staff with JT Raab and Jacob Steinmetz.
The highlight of his season was certainly his electric outing in the Antonia Agostinelli Memorial Tournament in October when he struck out 18 over 9 shutout innings against Jr. Ducks-Caputo in front of several scouts.
His fastball steadily rose into the low 90s to go along with his great changeup and breaking ball.
Two weeks ago Axcess Baseball hosted a pre-draft workout, which included Tommy and some other notable players. The event appeared to work, Cleveland was one of the teams represented at the event.
It’s unclear whether he will sign or head to Stony Brook in the fall, but Cleveland got themselves a steal as Ventimiglia is one of the best pitchers to come from Long Island in years.
