Grant Biederman (Walt Whitman 2021) has had a dominant senior season. He has pitched a perfect game against Hills East and his last start saw him throw a complete game, four hit shutout against the very same Hills East. Biederman showed how dominant he can be against Smithtown East
In the first inning, Whitman capitalized on two errors made by Smithtown East leading to Whitman’s only two runs in the game. The first run came in on an RBI single which was followed by a ball hit deep to left by sophomore Tyler Mezadurian that hit off of the left fielder’s glove, allowing the second run, and ultimately the deciding run, to cross the plate.
After that top half of the inning, Biederman kept Smithtown East bats quiet for 3 innings. He had a 6-pitch second inning with 2 groundouts and a strikeout to end the second frame that is worth noting.
The defense was key in the victory for Whitman as Biederman was producing a lot of routine ground balls. Making life easy for his infielders
Smithtown East threatened in the bottom of the 4th with first and second one out after 2 Errors made by a defense that played a really clean game otherwise. That’s when Biederman and the Whitman defense got the groundball they needed and the shortstop turned a 6-6-3 double play to end the frame and get out of serious trouble.
After that inning, both Smithtown East and Whitman’s defenses settled in and traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the 7th inning
After allowing back-to-back singles to start the bottom half of the inning, Biederman faced freshman Luke Ciminiello. After trying to sacrifice bunt earlier in the count, Ciminiello ended up delivering a clutch RBI double to plate the only run for Smithtown East in today’s game.
Two ground ball outs (including one where Whitman was able to prevent the tying run to score) and a sharp line drive to third later, Whitman was able to survive the late game comeback and secure the win.
Dan Rubino turned in a great performance going 7 strong innings and kept Smithtown East in the game after the costly errors made in the first inning.
Walt Whitman improves to 6-9 on the season and they will face off against North Babylon in their regular season finale on Thursday. Smithtown East heads to Lindenhurst tomorrow afternoon to play their last regular season road game of the season before returning home for their final regular season game on Thursday at home against Connetquot
