After struggling with his command in the second inning, Shoreham-Wading River RHP Jake Halloran settled down and struck out 13 over six innings in a 5-1 victory for the Wildcats over John Glenn.
On a steamy June morning in Shoreham, the second place Wildcats looking to stay in contention for the top spot of Suffolk Conference V but would need to top a pesky John Glenn team who is motivated to stay in postseason contention.
In the first inning, Halloran worked around an error by his third baseman and a single by Ryan Desmond to strike out the next three hitters in succession.
In the home half of the first, Billy Steele ripped a two out double to center and scored on an RBI single by Danny Kockenmeister to score Steele.
Halloran’s command eluded him in the second inning as he walked four batters and allowed a run to score on a sac fly by Joey Patane to center field to score Anthony Schieble.
In the bottom of the third, John Glenn RHP Joey Patane ran into trouble of his own, loading the bases with one out. It appeared he may get lucky and sneak out of the jam after an infield popout to first, but Danny Friedman made sure that wasn’t the case with a bases-clearing double to open up a 4-1 lead. That ended up being the difference in the game. It seems that Halloran settled down after that, not allowing another run to cross the plate. He struck out the side in the fifth inning – so he may have even gotten stronger as the game progressed.
SWR added an insurance run in the fifth on a sac fly by Niski
Joey Dwyer came on in relief for SWR in the seventh and he worked around a walk and a single to slam the door on the 5-1 victory. The Wildcats improved to 12-3 on the season, tied with Bayport-Blue Point for second place in the conference – both trailing Mount Sinai by one game.
