Friday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

Division-I:

Hofstra won an absolutely wild game, 14-11, against Delaware which featured 26 hits and 14 walks between the two teams. The Pride scored those 14 runs in just two of their innings with a five-spot in the second and nine in the seventh. The go-ahead run scored as part of that 9-run inning thanks to five bases loaded walks. Rob Weissheier further broke it open with a two-run single to left. Austin Gauthier drove in five runs including a second inning grand slam and he drew one of the bases loaded walks. Will Kennedy and Aidan Larkin each had two hits as well. Jack Jett had his first bad outing of the season for Hofstra – the grad student was tagged with 8 ER over 4.1 IP, he allowed nine hits and five walks. Michael O’Hanlon earned the win for the Pride, retiring two batters in the 7th. John Mikolaicyk bounced back and recorded the save, working around a walk and a hit.

The Pride improved to 13-14 on the season. They will host Delaware in another DH today beginning at 11.

St. John’s continued to struggle as they lost the first of their three-game set in Omaha to Creighton by the score of 6-1. Ace Nick Mondak was tagged with the tough loss, the southpaw went five inning, allowing 0 ER (4 runs) on five hits. A dropped foul ball in the first inning by the first baseman prolonged the inning which later resulted in a grand slam to give Creighton a 4-0 lead. St. John’s finally got on the board in the 7th inning on an RBI double by Marty Higgins to score Vincent Bianchi (2-for-4, 1 R), but it was too little, too late as Creighton took the opener. The Red Storm did outhit them 7-6, but stranded 7 runners on base.

The Johnnies fall back to .500 at 13-13. These two teams will play a DH today at 2 and 5 pm.

Fordham lost to UMASS, 4-2, to open up their weekend series. They took a 1-0 lead in the 4th inning on a solo shot by Zach Selinger, but UMASS tied it up in the 6th on an RBI single by Dylan Judd (Oceanside 2018). After Fordham took a 2-1 lead on a Nick Labella sac fly in the 7th, Judd struck again with an RBI single to tie it back up. A sac fly gave UMASS the lead for good in the 8th. Cameron Knox was tagged with the loss for Fordham. The Rams actually had 13 hits in this game – three apiece for Jason Coules and Chris Genaro – but they stranded 12.

The Rams fall to 18-13. They will host UMASS for a DH today beginning at noon.

LIU lost, 4-2, to Bryant to kick off their weekend series. The Sharks lone hit of the game came on a 4th inning RBI single by Gio Ciacchio. They scored their second run on a 9th inning RBI ground out by Andy Camilo. Jackson Svete started, and lasted just 0.2 IP and was tagged with the loss. Great job by Michael Andreoli in relief to eat up some innings, going 4.2 IP, to keep his team in the game.

The Sharks are 13-10 and will play the middle game of their series today at 1pm.

Division-II

Queens won a wild won, 15-14, against the 19th ranked team in the nation – St. Thomas Aquinas. In the bottom of the 9th, Liam Pulsipher hit a game-tying, bases-clearing triple and Jayson Rodopoulos hit a walk-off sac fly to score him and give them the victory. Queens was up by as much as 6-1 and STAC came roaring back to take a 14-11 lead in the 6th and  it appeared it would end that way until the 9th. Jordan Sanabria earned the win in relief for the Knights – he threw two hitless innings. Queens offense was relentless, they had 18 hits and drew 8 walks although they did strike out 13 times. Colin Diez, Brad Sakellarides, Teovaldo Estevez all had three hits. Pulsipher, starting in CF, drove in 4 runs.

The Knights are now 11-8. They will travel to Sparkill to play a DH today beginning at noon.
