Friday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

It was a relatively quiet day of action on Friday, which sets the stage for a wild Saturday as every team except for Molloy (program on pause) will be playing on Saturday including a great rivalry game between Farmingdale and St. Joseph’s.

Here’s how it went down yesterday:

Division-I:

Hofstra dropped the opener of their weekend series, 10-9, against Delaware to fall to 9-10 on the season but 0-4 in CAA play. The game was tied 7-7 in extra innings, and the Pride took a 9-7 on a passed ball that scored Brian Goulard and a wild pitch that scored Santino Rosso. With the two-run lead the game appeared to be in hand, but Delaware stormed back with an RBI single by SS Vinny Vaccone and a two-run walk-off single by CF Aidan Riley off John Mikolaicyk who took the loss, allowing five hits and two walks over two innings. For the Pride, it was a tough way to lose after their offense put nine runs on the board. The pitching staff labored all day, needing 196 pitches to record 27 outs. Jimmy Joyce started and went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Andrew Mundy threw a scoreless inning in relief, but Chris Mott was tagged with a run over his 0.2 innings. Aljo Sujak escaped a jam in the seventh with a strikeout. Offensively, the Pride notched eight hits and drew four walks but struck out 14 times and left 7 men on base. Austin Gauthier, Santino Rosso and Brian Goulard accounted for six of the eight hits.

They will be back in action today with a double header in Delaware at 1 and 4pm.

St. John’s lost 5-1 to Georgetown top open up a their weekend series. They were held to just two hits by LHP Angelo Tonas and two Hoyas relievers. Anthony Redfern recorded the save in the ninth, entering after the Red Storm had mounted a rally and had runners on second and third with 0 out. He set down the next three hitters in order. The only hits for St. John’s came by Brandon Miller. Nick Mondak was tagged with the loss – he allowed two ER over five innings with seven strikeouts.

These two teams will be back in action this afternoon for a double header at 1 and 4. The Johnnies are 10-8 overall but 1-3 in BIG EAST play.

LIU lost 4-2 to Central Connecticut State University to fall to 10-7 overall and 8-5 in NEC play. LIU trailed 2-0 entering the fifth inning, but cut that lead in half on an RBI single by Anthony Warneke. In the seventh, CCSU extended their lead to 3-1 on a bases loaded walk but it was Warneke once again that drove in a run to cut the lead to 3-2. In the eighth, CCSU added an insurance run off Pat Clyne. In the 9th, the Sharks threatened and had runners on first and second but EJ Exposito popped to end the game. LIU actually outhit CCSU, 8-7, and played clean defensively to CCSU’s two errors but they did not get the timely hit when it mattered – leading nine runners on base. Warneke and Colin Adams each had two hits for the Sharks.

The two teams will be back in action today at 3pm.

Division-II:

Queens split a DH with Mercy, losing the first game 6-2, but taking the second game, 7-5. They have a record of 7-6 overall and 5-5 in conference play. In the victory, Dante Interlandi earned the win in relief. The southpaw went two shutout innings, striking out three allowing one hit but walking four. John Rodopoulos recorded the save with a shutout inning in the seventh with two strikeouts. Trailing 5-4 in the fourth inning, Andrew Smith hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and an errant throw allowed a second run to score to give Queens a 6-5 lead. They added an insurance run on an RBI single by Reed Hoskins. Juan Vasquez was the lone player with two hits.
