Friday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

Division-I

Stony Brook ran their win streak to 10 games – all in conference play – so they are 10-0 in America East conference games – and 14-7 overall after sweeping UMASS-Lowell in a double header yesterday. In Game 1, UMASS took an early 2-0 lead against Sam Turcotte on a sac fly by Vinnie Martin and a an RBI single by Gerry Siracusa. As is usually the case, Turcotte buckled down and was lights-out the rest of the way while the Seawolves chipped away. Brett Paulsen’s sac fly got them on the board in the second inning and Shane Paradine‘s solo shot tied it up in the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh, Derek Yalon gave them the lead with a two-run double to score Paulsen and John LaRocca. Evan Giordano followed with a two-run HR to extend the lead to 6-2. Turcotte closed it out. He’s now 4-1 on the season with a 1.87 ERA.

In Game 2, the Seawolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Shane Paradine, but Gerry Siracusa hit an RBI single in the second to tie it up against Jared Milch. With the score knotted 1-1 in the 5th, Chris Hamilton drew a bases loaded walk. John Tuccillo reached on a fielder’s choice to score Evan Giordano and in the eighth, Giordano hit an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-1. In the bottom of the eighth, though, Joey Castellanos hit a two-run shot off Devin Sharkey to make it 4-3. In the ninth, Cedric Rose tied it up with a solo shot off closer Kyle Johnson. In the top of the 10th with two outs and nobody on, Derek Yalon and Evan Giordano both drew walks and then a passed ball followed by a wild pitch scored Yalon to give the Seawolves the 5-4 lead. In the bottom of the 10th, Johnson struck out two batters to slam the door on the victory. It’s the longest win streak in Stony Brook history. Giordano went 6-for-8 in the double header and is leading the team in hitting at .363. They will look for the sweep today as they play another DH at 12 and 3.

St. John’s played for the first time in March 21 following a COVID pause. They made it worth the wait as they took down Xavier, 2-1, at the Jack. Their pitching was outstanding, as they struck out 12 batters and limited Xavier to only 5 hits. Nick Mondak started and went six strong innings, allowing 1 ER while striking out 8 batters. Joe Joe Rodriguez did a great job in relief, throwing two hitless innings with two strikeouts before giving way to closer Ethan Routzahn who threw a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts. Marty Higgins hit an RBI single in the second inning to score Vincent Bianchi. In the sixth inning, David Williams drew a bases loaded walk to break the 1-1 tie and that’s all the offense that was needed. They will be back at it today at noon in Queens.

LIU got back on the right track with a hard-fought 5-1 victory in 12 innings over Wagner. They trailed 1-0 in the fifth inning when, who else, EJ Exposito tied it up with an RBI single to score Anthony Warneke. The score remained tied until the top of the 12th when Warneke a bases-clearing double to make it 4-1 and he came around to score on another RBI single by Exposito to extend it to 5-1. Rob Griswold fired 3.2 shutout innings of relief to earn the W. Jackson Svete started for LIU and allowed 0 ER over 6.1 IP with six strikeouts. Warneke, Exposito and Colin Adams each had two hits. They will play a double header today at 1 and 4.

Fordham sort of had a disappointing DH split with St. Bonaventure who entered the day with a record of 1-8. In Game 1, they led 3-0 and appeared to have the game in hand but fell apart in the sixth inning as the Bonnies put up a five-spot and added two more in the eighth inning. Brooks Ey was tagged with the loss, he allowed 5 ER over 2.1 IP. Alvin Melendez was the lone Ram with a multi-hit game.

They got revenge in Game 2, as LHP Garrett Crowley was absolutely untouchable. He struck out 15, allowing just two hits over a 7-inning complete game. He needed just 104 pitches so it shows how dominant he was. The lone run came on a solo shot in the first inning. Fordham tied it up on an RBI single by Richard Grund and they took the lead later in the second on an RBI single by Colton Snelling. That’s all Crowley would need.

Fordham improved to 13-7 with the win. They will play a DH today at 12 and 3 in The Bronx with LHP Matt Mikulski getting the start in Game 1. The flamethrower has been touching close to 100 MPH and is expected to draw 25+ scouts.

Hofstra lost 8-2 to CAA rival, Northeastern, to fall to 9-7 on the season. Northeastern took a 4-0 lead in the third inning and the Pride were never able to recover. Fresman Will Kennedy did have a big game with an RBI double in the second and a solo shot in the fifth. That accounted for two of their five hits. Cam Schittler struck out 11 over 7 innings for Northeastern. Steven Kaenzig was tagged with the loss for the Pride.

Division-II

Queens got back to .500 on the season with a DH sweep over D’Youville College by the scores of 10-1 and 6-2. In Game 1, Dean Fazah started and was terrific going five innings, yielding just one hit and one walk, striking out four without allowing a run. He earned his first W of the season. The Knights offense notched 17 hits with Reed Hoskins accounting for four of those. Jordan Ramlogan, Andrew Smith, Evan Christopher, Brad Sakellarides and Jayson Rodopoulos all had two hits. Ramlogan drove in two runs with a double to extend the lead to 8-0.

In Game 2, the Knights actually trailed 2-1 in the 3rd before the bats went to work. Teovaldo Estevez tied it up with a solo shot in the third. They took the lead with an RBI single by Nick Barreiros and they never looked back. Dylan Hughes started, went four innings and earned the W, while Dmitri Papazoglou fired three hitless innings for the save.

They will look to complete the sweep this afternoon in a DH beginning at noon.
