Friday College Recap Powered by Orlin & Cohen

It was Good Friday for those who celebrate, but it was also a really good friday for Stony Brook, who kept their win streak going, LIU and USMMA on an exceptionally cold April day in the northeast.

Here’s how it went down:

Division-I

Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Hartford. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte started and earned the win. Hartford was able to get out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on a sac fly and an RBI ground out to second. He settled in after that and was lights-out moving forward. He went the complete seven innings, allowing just 2 runs (1 ER), allowing five hits and striking out six. Shane Paradine hit a sac fly to score Evan Giordano in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded walk by Evan Giordano tied the game up at 2. In the sixth, it was Giordano again with a two-run double to break the tie and give the Seawolves a 4-2 lead. They added an insurance run on an RBI double by Chris Hamilton. The Seawolves had just four hits in the game, but they made them count.

In Game 2 for their sixth straight win. Jared Milch got the start and was masterful, going seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven for his first win of the season. The Seawolves got out to an early 1-0 lead on a wild pitch that scored John Tuccillo. In the fourth, Evan Giordano broke it open with a three-run shot to left. Evan Fox added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 5-0, and John LaRocca stretched it to 7-0 with a two-run single. They will play another DH today beginning at 12 as Stony Brook looks to stay hot.

Hofstra lost an absolutely wild game to Rhode Island, 12-11, to fall to 7-6 on the season. It was their first game since March 14. Hofstra led 4-0 in the top of the first on an RBI double by Rob Weissheier, an error that scored Anthony D’Onofrio and a two-run single by Kevin Bruggeman. Ryan Rue got the start for the Pride and he struggled – going two innings, allowing five ER on three hits and four walks (and HBP). Hofstra tied the game up in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Ryan Morash. The lead did not last, as Mark Coley gave URI the lead with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth inning, the Pride got one back on a wild pitch that scored Aidan Larkin, and then Brian Goulard came through with a big bases-clearing double to give Hofstra a 9-7 lead. Unfortunately for the Pride, URI came right back and regained the lead on a bases loaded HBP, a sac fly and a wild pitch to take a 10-9 lead. In the eighth inning, Hofstra tied it up on an RBI single by Will Kennedy and took the 11-10 lead on Kevin Bruggeman’s RBI single. Chris Mott came on in relief in the eighth to protect the lead, but allowed a bases-loaded two-run single by Alex Santos to give URI the 12-11 lead, and that’s how this would end. Overall, there was 28 total hits in this game and five lead changes. Here’s some of the top performers for the Pride:

Rob Weissheier: 3 hits, 4 runs, 1 RBI

Brian Goulard: 2 hits, 1 run, 4 RBI

Kevin Bruggeman: 2 hits, 3 RBI

Aidan Larkin: 2 hits, 1 run

Austin Gauthier: 2 hits, 1 run

Anthony D’Onofrio: 2 hits, 2 runs

They will be back in action today for a DH.

LIU won, 14-5,against Farleigh Dickinson. This one was overly fairly quickly, as the Sharks got out to an early 9-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Dawson Degnan delivered the knockout punch with a two-run single to make it 8-0 and effectively end this game. Alec Huertas got the start and earned the win, going five innings, allowing two ER on four hits and two walks. The offense crushed 13 hits and drew five walks against FDU’s pitching staff. Anthony Warneke compiled with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Degnan led the way with four hits, two runs and two RBI. They improve to 7-4 and will be back in action today at 2 pm, looking for a sweep.

Division-III

USMMA improved to 5-0 with a double header sweep over SUNY Purchase by the scores of 7-0 and 15-6. In Game 1, it was all Joe Raab. The LHP was masterful, striking out 10 over a complete game, four-hitter. He is now 2-0 on the young season. Colin Baker smacked a two-run HR in the third and that was all the support he would need. They added insurance runs in the third, sixth and two in the seventh. Zac Skov had two hits, an RBI and scored a run. Jack McCann drove in three runs and had two hits. Jack Millen, Colin Baker and Tyler Reistetter each had two hits as well.

In Game 2, both teams brought their bats as USMMA came away with a 15-6 win. They got off to an early 1-0 lead on an error off the bat of Colin Baker that scored Joey Zanetti. Purchase took a 2-1 lead on a squeeze play and an RBI single. Jack Millen tied it up with an RBI single and Jack McCann reached on an error to give USMMA the 3-2 lead. They led the rest of the way. The closest the game got was 5-4 in the third, but Zanetti’s solo shot gave them some breathing room.

Tyler Reistetter did a great job in relief of Quinton Heck, going 3.2 innings of relief to secure the win. Andrew Hunt was his usual dominant self, throwing 3 shutout innings to record the save.

They had 14 hits and drew six walks. Jack Millen led the way with four hits and five RBI, Zanetti and Zack Coutts each had three hits. They will be back in action for a DH today a 1 & 4 as they look to ride this wave.

JuCo:

Suffolk was crushed 15-1 by Monroe to drop to 2-6 on the season. Derek Perez started and took the loss, as he surrendered 8 ER on 11 hits over 2.2 IP. Suffolk committed six errors and  only compiled five hits, with Joey Giannico notching two of those. Roman Dorosh (Sachem East 2019) earned the win with a shutout inning of relief to improve to 3-0. They will look to reverse the course of their season beginning today against Ulster in a DH beginning at 12.
