Jason Campo is a power hitting first baseman from St. John the Baptist. The 2022 grad attended our Ducks Stadium Showcase back in August of 2019. Yesterday he announced his commitment to attend Stony Brook University. St. John the Baptist, who captured the CHSAA title in 2018, is building quite a program under Head Coach Casey McKay. Don’t be surprised if they are playing on Championship Monday next year.
I spoke with Jason about his experience with the college recruiting process and a myriad of other topics, and here’s what he had to say…
Can you explain your experience with the college recruitment process and why you chose Stony Brook?
My college recruitment process went very smoothly. Every couple of weeks I would touch base with Jim Martin, the assistant coach for Stony Brook, and we would talk about how I’ve been doing on and off the field. I chose Stony Brook because it is close to home and in my opinion it’s one of the top teams for baseball in the northeast.
How were you able to stay sharp during the quarantine ? Do you have any private coaches you work with ?
I would go to the field almost everyday with my dad and he will throw me BP and hit me ground balls. My hitting coach is Tom Downey.
How would you evaluate your performance this summer ?
I thought I played pretty good this summer, I ended the summer batting around .400 with over 30 hits. I would of liked more XBH but I’m happy with how I played.
Who are some individuals that have had an impact on your career ?
Definitely my mom and my dad. My travel team coaches. The SJB coaching staff really taught me a lot in just the few months I got to play for them.
Favorite players in Major League Baseball?
Aaron Judge and Luke Voit – because he’s the first baseman for the Yankees.
Goals for 2021?
Continue to play well on the field and continue to do well in school
SJB seems to be building a great program. Can you discuss the talent on the team?
We have a lot of talent. Our ace is Kyle Chase who topped 91 this summer and we have a stud shortstop in Aedan Forde. We also got some new transfers (Randy Ramnarace who tops 86 I think and a second baseman who was on my summer team who has a really good bat as well) I am really looking forward to playing with a team like that.
