Oceanside Accomplish Comeback to Defeat Bethpage, 10-7

by James Ryder

The Bethpage Golden Eagles hosted the Oceanside Sailors Monday evening at Bethpage Senior High School. Both teams, part of the Long Island Boys of Summer Nassau Varsity Division, had big scoring innings midway through the action. Oceanside, despite falling back 7-1, mounted the comeback in the fourth inning and later created a cushion for themselves in the sixth. This resulted in their 10-7 victory over Bethpage.

Both squads were scoreless heading into the bottom of the second inning. This changed when the Sailors managed to load the bases with no outs. Tyler Cinamon snuck a ground ball past first base to give Oceanside their first lead and make it 1-0.

Unfortunately, they did not tack on runs. This allowed Bethpage to respond with a huge top of the third. After back-to-back singles by Lucas Seely and Tommy Muran, both were driven in on Sean Lunetto’s single to right-center field. Bethpage stayed hungry despite snagging the 2-1 lead. They followed this with three straight walks, the third of which by Alex Rubin made it 3-1.

This led to Tyler Zanghi coming to the mound in relief for Oceanside. Anthony Vega immediately hit a bases clearing triple to deep RCF, making it 6-1. Then, James Martin hit the ball to shortstop and was thrown out, but it was enough to score Vega. It was the only run charged to Zanghi, who would pitch the remaining four innings without allowing a run.

Zanghi’s success the remainder of the game helped the Sailor’s execute their comeback. Oceanside managed to once again quickly load the bases with no outs, this time in the bottom, of the fourth. They did it with two straight walks and a single. Jack Walsh hit a deep fly ball to RF which was dropped, allowing two runs to score. Rafael Galan was hit by a pitch to load the bases again and Zach Ducorsky drew a walk to make it 7-4. James Capozzi hit a ground ball into a double play, but this still brought in their fifth run. Finally, Zanghi hit an RBI single to LF to make it a one run game going into the fifth, 7-6.

In the top half, Zanghi retired 3 of the 4 batters he faced. In the bottom half, the Sailors took back the lead. Tyler Cinamon hit an RBI single to LF to tie the game and Walsh followed it up with a sac-fly RBI to give Oceanside the 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Sailors tacked on 2 more runs to expand their lead. Mike Lullo was responsible for both with his single to CF, making it 10-7. Zanghi then closed the game out with a 1-2-3 top of the 7th. He struck out Bethpage’s final batter to end it. Final Score: Oceanside 10, Bethpage 7.
