Ethan Merone may only be 15 but Wantagh players tend to have a great feel for the big moments.
The rising sophomore pitched a gem in the opening game of the sixth annual Brian Moore Memorial Tournament at Allen Park in Farmingdale. His South Shore Elite went up against the 495 Wolfpack with a 6:30 start time on a beautiful summer evening. Merone worked quickly, with the only jam really coming in the second inning when he allowed two walks and a single but escaped the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to left.
He didn’t need much offense support but he got some in the bottom of the first when Brian Fader singled and advanced to second when the throw got away. He stole third base and later scored on an RBI single to right field by Joe Thatcher.
Merone worked arund a two-out single in the second inning by Andrew Marotta to escape unscathed.
The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Jimenez started a rally with a one-out single to right and stole second. Tyler Levi walked, which brought up leadoff hitter Brian Fader. He smacked one down the left field line to score two runs and open up a 3-0 lead. Ryan Klass followed it up with an RBI single of his own to make it 4-0.
Merone went back out in the top of the sixth and worked around a hitting batter to keep the lead safe. His offense added another run in the sixth on an error that score Jack Kellner to extend the lead to 5-0 and that’s the way it would end as the time limit came after the sixth.
They will be back in action tonight at 8:15pm against LI Titans-Stybel, the Wolfpack will face Batting 1.000 at 8:15pm as well.
Tune in all weekend as we will continue to have coverage of the Brian Moore Memorial Tournament.
