OTD: Massapequa Captures Third Consecutive County AA Championship

For the third year in a row, Massapequa has won the Class AA County Championship. This time, they defeated Port Washington 8-6, clinching the sweep and the title.

From the beginning of the series, there was never much doubt in Massapequa.

Building off Friday’s victory, Massapequa wasted no time taking charge. In the bottom of the 2nd, RBI from Dan Sohn and Alex Rende provided Massapequa with an early 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Johnny Castagnozzi launched a three-run HR to left field, putting the Chiefs out in front 6-0. considering Derek Haag shut down the Port Washington lineup early, it seemed as if this game was already over. However, Port Washington wasn’t done yet.

With an 8-1 lead in the 5th, the Vikings began to chip away. RBI from Alex ChangJackson TrenamanJames LubanksiAdam Jackman and two errors suddenly made this an 8-6 ballgame.

Leading by two runs after five, the Chiefs knew it was no more time for games.

Max Effort Training

Although the Massapequa offense was stagnated, Dan Wolf came to shine on the mound when mattered most. He tossed two innings allowing one hit and no earned runs. When it was all said and done, Massapequa was once again dog piling for the third year in a row.

“Third one today three in a row, the team showed that we have a lot of heart, we were getting down in the game but we fought through it and showed what we’re made of I never thought we were going to lose, always in my mind that we were going to win and we won. Three in a row,” said Johnny Castagnozzi.

The Massapequa dynasty continues. They will play for the Class AA Long Island Championship on Saturday, as they seek a second straight State Championship.
