Saturday College Baseball Recap Powered By Orlin & Cohen

A chaotic day of college baseball on Saturday is the only way to say it. Big wins against regional opponents, wild games in the wild west, pitcher’s duel in Garden City and huge offensive performances in Flushing.

Let’s just right into it.

But first, check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here.

Division-I:

  • Stony Brook lost the middle game of their three-game set, 5-3, to Central Connecticut State University. They fell behind 3-0 in the fourth inning but got one back on an RBI ground out by Brad Hipsley to score Shane Paradine. CCSU took a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the ninth. Chris Hamilton made it a close ballgame with a two-run double to score Johnny Decker and Hipsley but with the tying run at the plate, Brett Paulsen grounded out to end the game. They will play the rubber game of the series today at 1 pm.

Johnny Decker led the Seawolves offense with three hits, Chris Hamilton was the only other player to notch multi-hits. Sam Turcotte was tagged with the loss, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three ER on six hits and two walks. Brian Morrisey, Commack grad, threw 3.1 innings of relief, allowing two ER on two hits and a walk.

  • In a cruel twist of fate, Hofstra lost all three games of their series at New Mexico by one-run – and all three featured double-digit runs for each team. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Austin Gauthier broke an 11-11 tie in the 9th inning with a two-run triple to score Tyler White and Kevin Bruggeman. In the bottom of the ninth, though, after the leadoff man was retired, Mark Faello allowed consecutive singles and a hit by pitch to load the bases. A bases loaded walked brought New Mexico to within one run. A fly out to right put Hofstra one out away from victory. Lucas Hall was brought on in relief of Faello, who threw a wild pitch and issued consecutive four-pitch walk to allow the winning run to score.

In the night cap, the Pride immediately took a 3-0 lead on a two-run shot by Vinnie Costello and a solo shot by Robert Weissheier. An RBI singly by Kyler Castillo in the third inning cut the lead to 3-1 in favor of Hofstra. New Mexico broke through in the fifth inning, though, scoring four runs to take a 6-4 lead. The rally occurred all with two outs and nobody on. Three walks and a hit by pitch brought in one run, a two-run single by Ediberto Reyes and an RBI single by Lance Russell accounted for the runs. The game was far from finished, though. The Lobos put up another four spot in the sixth inning to lead 10-3. Down to their final three outs, the Pride put together a furious rally in the ninth inning to tie up the game. The runs scored on an RBI single by Myles Mensah, RBI ground out by Brian Goulard, two-run double by Anthony D’Onofrio, RBI single by Sean Flaherty and Myles Mensah – batting for the second time in the inning – tied it up with a two-run double. In the bottom of the ninth, Mike Mirando came on to keep the game tied for the Pride. After retiring the first two batters, a single, stolen base and an RBI single resulted in a second disheartening defeat for the Pride. Cumulative score of Saturday, New Mexico 25, Hofstra 23. They will host LIU on Wednesday in their home opener.

Division-II:

  • Adelphi stayed hot with an impressive 1-0 victory over No. 10 ranked Southern New Hampshire. After scoring 50 runs in their first four games, the Panthers knew it would not come as easy against the top ranked team in the region. Fortunately, they had ace Josh Rovner on the hill who threw 6.2 innings of shutout baseball against the high-flying Penmen. The Panthers lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out by Kyle Olson to score Lawrence Cicileo. After Rovner struck out the first two batters in the seventh inning, a two-out single resulted in a call to the bullpen for the Panthers. Lefty freshman Michael Storms came on and coaxed an inning-ending line out to first. The reliable Tom Ambrosino came on to record the six-out save and seal the deal for the Panthers.

The Panthers had eight hits in the game, with Anthony Cipri and Lawrence Cicileo both notching multi-hits. Sam Henrie had three hits for the Penmen, but they were unable to cash in each time.
