On Saturday, the local teams produced some victories and definitely some entertaining games, gaining some momentum going into Sunday’s series finales. With many teams already generating series wins with today’s outings, here’s how it played out:

Division I
- Stony Brook took on Southeastern Louisiana University in the second game of their three game series. After a tough 11-0 shutout loss, the Seawolves woke up their bats and came out on top, 11-6, in an extra inning thrill ride.
Stony Brook opened up the scoring with a Shane Paradine single, with an error by the right fielder Christian Garcia, Cristian Montes was able to race home. While the Seawolves were able to gain another run, the Lions were able to wake up their offense and score three of their own, taking a 3-2 lead. The back-and-forth action continued with a big grand slam by Brad Hipsley, putting them back on top 6-3. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Lions still had some fight left in them, scoring two runs and tying the game up and forcing extras. As the top of the eleventh rolled around, the Seawolves thought it was time to end it. Scoring five runs and capping it off with a Chris Hamilton 2-run homer to defeat Southeastern Louisiana University.
Despite only one hit, Brad Hipsley made it count. He drove in four runs and scored two of his own. His grand slam provided to be a pivotal turning point in the game.
Brandon Lashley pitched a great two innings in extras to hold it down for Stony Brook. Only allowing one hit and striking out two and earning his first win of the season.
As the Seawolves improve to 2-7 on the season, the third and final game of the series commences tomorrow at 2 P.M.
- St. John’s suffered another tough loss on Saturday, losing in walk-off fashion to Charlotte, 6-5. The Red Storm fall to 3-5 on the season but continue to show signs of breaking out.
Charlotte took a commanding three-run lead to open the game in the first but a 2-run homer by Justin Folz cut into that lead. The bats went quiet after that though, allowing Charlotte to put up two more runs in the process. In a valiant effort St. John’s tied the game up in the ninth on a Mike Antico walk to make the score 5-5. Unfortunately, the luck ran out for our home team, with a bases loaded fielder’s choice RBI by Josh Haney, the 49ers were able to come out on top.
Junior third baseman Justin Foltz produced at the plate for St. John’s. Going 2-for-4, driving in two runs and scoring two of his own in the process.
Geoff Mosseau, tossed a scoreless three innings for the Red Storm, only allowing one hit and striking out three.
The Red Storm take on the 49ers in the conclusion of the series tomorrow at 1 P.M.
- Hofstra won their second straight game against Nevada, 7-2. Hofstra improves to 3-7 on the season and hopes to find a groove going into their next series against New Mexico.
Hofstra tallied twelve hits in their win on Saturday over the Wolf Pack, opening up their scoring courtesy of Alex Sica. Sica cracked a deep solo homer down the left field line in the second and added to his RBI total in the fourth with a single through the left side. The Lions would only add to that lead by scoring four in the eighth, tallying two doubles and a single to put the game away and defeat Nevada.
Ryan Rue earned his first win of the season on the back of a seven strikeout performance. Rue only gave up one run on five hits during his seven strong innings of work.
Senior first baseman Alex Sica went 2-for-4 on the day and was a key factor in getting the Lions started. His booming home run and timely base hit led to him driving in two runs and scoring once on the day.
Hofstra takes on the New Mexico Lobos next Friday (3/6) at 3 P.M.
- Fordham finds themselves in the midst of a three-game winning streak after a big 8-3 win against Furman. The Rams continue to see their record to climb, moving up to 4-6 on the season.
The game started off slow between the two but quickly turned into a show for the Rams offense in the later innings. Alvin Melendez opened up the scoring for the Rams, driving in two runs on a base hit to center field in the fourth. With Furman’s Jordan Starkes hitting a 2-run home run, the Paladins tied the score at two a piece. The floodgates opened for Furman as the Rams struck for six unanswered runs, capped off by a C.J. Vazquez RBI single. Fordham would keep the Paladin’s to one run the rest of the game and slam the door with reliever Gabe Karslo.
Jason Coules had himself a day at the plate, going 3-for-5 and recording an RBI and a run scored on the day. Coules continues to crush baseballs, raising his average to an amazing .419 on the season.
Sophomore reliever Gabe Karslo did a great job slamming the door on the Paladis and earning his first save of the season. Karslo pitched three innings of unearned run ball and recorded three strikeouts in the process.
Fordham closes out their series against Furman tomorrow at 12 P.M. hoping for the series sweep.
- After suffering a tough loss to Nicholls State last night, LIU put together a great outing and blanked the Colonels 3-0. LIU looks to get back on track as they improve their record to 2-4.
Most of LIU’s run production came from catcher Andy Camilo, recording two of the games three RBI’s in the first and fifth innings. Anthony Warneke, scoring two runs of his own, recorded the games last RBI in the ninth on a single through the left side. The Sharks pitching staff was the real highlight of the game, combining for only five hits and giving up zero runs on the day.
Joshua Loeschorn led his pitching staff, tossing a solid five innings of work only allowing five hits and recording four strikeouts. Loeschorn earned his first win of the season and propelled his team to a much needed win.
Shortstop Anthony Warneke went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring two of the games three runs and driving in the other. Warneke’s hot bat continues to shine at the top of the Shark’s order, increasing his average to .429 on the season.
LIU closes out their series with Nichols State tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 3 P.M.
Division II
- (#8) New York Tech dropped Saturday afternoon’s game to (#23) Southern New Hampshire 4-1. NYIT falls to 4-2 on the season and looks to rebound tomorrow in the doubleheader.
Southern New Hampshire controlled the game from start to finish, opening up the scoring with a Tom Blandini RBI single. The Bears lone run came in the eighth inning on a Ben Mcneill double, scoring EJ Exposito. Nick Artymowicz came in for the Penmen and shut the door, earning his first save of the season.
Ben McNeill provided the only RBI for the Bears offense, going 2-for-4 on the day and raising his average to an impressive .375 on the season.
Senior John LaRocca did his job at the top of the lineup, going 2-for-4 and getting on base setting the table for the heart of the order.
NYIT closes out their series with the Penmen tomorrow with game one of the doubleheader starting at 11 A.M.
- Adelphi lost a wild one, 20-17, to Franklin Pierce. You can read about it here. They will play a doubleheader today at 1 pm.
