Tucked away on the north shore of Long Island is Cold Spring Harbor. The reigning Class B Nassau County Champs had an outstanding season going 19-5 but still remain on the periphery when it comes to consistently dominant programs.

When researching players for this series, I try to find players that haven’t generated a ton of buzz yet but will soon. This players’ coach told me “I have the perfect player to recommend, I know for a fact you haven’t heard of him yet, but you will.”

As a 7th grader playing in middle school, Matt Gileno‘s numbers were off-the-charts. He batted .613 with a .688 OBP. He threw a no-hitter against an 8th grade team. During the summer against better competition, he batted .426 with 4 HR and drew 27 walks since pitchers were hesitant to let him do damage.

I had a chance to speak with him, and here’s what he had to say…

Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why?

My top three players are probably Javier Baez, Francisco Lindor and Ronald Acuna. I love the flair and passion each of them play with.

Who are your biggest role models in life and why?

My biggest role models are probably my coaches, parents and some professional players. This is because of the way they carry themselves during good times and bad.

What has been your biggest thrill on the baseball field?

My biggest thrill would probably be hitting a home run in Dreams Park and getting the win. Being such a small kid in a huge tournament and being able to contribute felt great.

Was baseball always your favorite sport and do you come from an athletic family?

Baseball has been my favorite sport since day one. My father was never a big athlete but was one that introduced me to the game.

What are your goals for 2020 and what do you plan on doing this off-season to work on it?

My goals for the upcoming season would be to be on a successful team. Some personal goals would be to hit 90+ off a tee and above 95 in batting practice. This would require hours in the gym and an understanding on how to get better.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not playing baseball?

When I’m not playing baseball I enjoy going on vacations with the family and hanging with my friends. I love to find new ways to get better.

Favorite musical artist?

Favorite artist has got to be Travis Scott.

Favorite app on your phone?

Favorite app would be browsing Stock X or GOAT. I love shopping for shoes.

Who are some individuals that have helped you in your career?

Some individuals who have helped me get to where I am would be all my coaches from Syosset Baseball, my coaches from Long Island Elite and the coaches who brought me to Cooperstown
