Corey Phelan is a 2020 graduate of Harborfields HS. He is the younger brother of St. Joseph’s freshman, Connor Phelan, and the son of former Cold Spring Harbor coach, Chris Phelan. He announced his verbal commitment to Division-II powerhouse Flagler College yesterday.
I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…
Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Flagler?
My experience with the college recruiting process was very difficult. I was blessed to have received offers from Div-I, Div-II and Div-III schools. They were all very good baseball programs and academic schools. I visited Flagler College when I was 14-years-old and fell in love with the school. I was blessed to receive an offer from Coach Barnett and I was very excited to accept.
Can you discuss your relationship with your father and how his experience as a varsity baseball coach benefited your playing career?
I have a strong relationship with my dad. He has been my idol throughout my life and has taught me everything I know about being respectful as a person, both on-and-off the field. He has taught me everything I know about the game of baseball. Since I was young, I was fortunate enough to be around the game of baseball a lot. Starting around the age off 6 or 7, I remember sitting on the bucket in my dad’s dugout and watching either his Cold Spring Harbor team or his Titans’ team play. He would let me call pitches and I loved being around the players. We have a close knit family and my parents are a big part of my success.
Was baseball always your No. 1 sport?
I liked playing all sports when I was younger but baseball has always been a major part of my life and always my favorite!
What’s your favorite type of music?
My favorite type of music is rap and I like many different artists.
Do you work with any private instructors?
My dad has always worked with me both offensively and defensively, as well as pitching. Last winter, I went to Neal Heaton to hear a different voice and we work well together.
Who are your favorite professional athletes?
My favorite professional athletes are Derek Jeter and Didi Gregorius.
What are your goals for 2020?
My goals for 2020 are to continue working hard on and off the field and have a successful school baseball season.
Do you plan on being a two-way player in college?
It is very hard to be a two-way player in college. I really enjoy pitching and I am going to be a PO at Flagler College.
