Massapequa R. Baseball Edges LIB 4-2 in Annual Sal Agostinelli Tournament Action

by Chris Amato

The annual Sal Agostinelli Tournament is a time when players from all over the Northeast come to get recognized by college and pro scouts. High school players not only compete for a victory, but for an opportunity to play at the next level. The pressure is high and players do everything they can to get noticed. Massapequa starting pitcher, Keifer Samul, lived up to the occasion by tossing a complete game and leading his team to a win.

The uncommitted senior out of Tom’s River South High School in New Jersey was dominant in his outing for Massapequa. Samul racked up a total of 16 strikeouts over the course of a complete game while only allowing 2 earned runs that came in the 2nd inning. When asked how he was able to get back on track after the shaky start, he said, “You just gotta work through it and keep pounding the zone.” The righty had a final line of 6IP, 16 K, 7BB, 3H, 2ER.

The offense for Massapequa also came up big in their win over LIB. They were able to get runners on and bring them in when it mattered most. Timely hitting ended up being the story of the night.

The scoring started in the 4th inning when Tom Marten (Kellenberg ‘20) roped an RBI single into right-center field. The hit scored Ryan Umano (Massapequa ‘20) who reached base earlier in the inning on a walk. The scoring kept coming after the following batter, Tyler Sohn, hit a fielder’s choice ground ball which scored his brother, Dan Sohn, from third.

After Massapequa was able to get runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th inning, Ryan Umano stepped to the plate with 1 out in the inning. The game was getting late and the team knew they needed a big hit to put them up. Umano did just that when he laced a 2 RBI single into right field. The hit put them up 4-2 which also ended up being the game winning runs.

Massapequa will look to continue their hot start on Sunday morning when they take on Sharks Baseball Academy at 10:00 am in Center Moriches.
