Get to Know Xavier Cruz

Xavier Cruz is a 2020 graduate of Kellenberg HS. He announced his verbal commitment to SUNY Maritime this week. Cruz is a talented outfielder and will be a critical part of the Firebirds team this upcoming season. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say…

Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose SUNY Maritime?

My college recruiting process was very long and stressful. At the beginning of my process, I had big name schools who were recruiting me from the end of my sophomore year. I developed relations with a lot of coaches and scouts. I had the opportunity to play all over the country and be seen on a national level. But as time went on, schools just went in a different direction. Other kids were getting recruited. Some who I thought I was better than and some who I’ve played with and against on great teams. It was frustrating and disappointing. Sometimes it took the fun out of the game and it would wear down on my confidence. But my family, friends and coaches and my faith in God helped me get through the rough times. I chose SUNY Maritime because when I stepped onto campus, it felt like home. Coach Barbieri, Coach Rodriguez and the players on the team, made me feel welcome the minute I met them. I knew right away that it was where I wanted to spend my next 4 years. I have the opportunity to be an impact player as a freshman and that was a big draw for me. The school just gave me a feeling that I’ve never had with other college visits. At Maritime, everyone knows each other and they are like one big family. I come from a Hispanic and Italian background where FAMILY is everything. That’s what spoke to me and I am beyond happy with my decision.

Who are the most influential people in your life?

The most influential people in my life are my parents. They show me how to be caring/loving, intelligent, trustworthy, and responsible. They have made me into the man I am today and I am very thankful for them. They have guided me this far and now it’s my turn to take control. They sacrifice plenty of things so that me and my sister can have everything we may need. This past summer I lost my grandmother. She was in and out of the hospital before she passed and my mother and father were very strong throughout it all. I aspire to be just as strong as they are. I also lost my sister, Cecilia, in 2005. My parents were devastated and to be honest I don’t know how they were able to stay strong. Losing your child is the worst thing that could happen when you’re a parent. It took a lot of strength, faith and hope to overcome that. They put faith in God and were able to overcome this huge obstacle in their life and that’s when our family was blessed with my other sister, Amelia. My parents really show me true strength and I’m blessed to call them Mom and Dad.

Who’s your favorite player in the Major Leagues ?

My favorite player is Derek Jeter because he was a leader on and off the field. He was a quiet leader but he lead by example and came to play. He gave his team everything he had. He brought a lot of passion and dedication to the game, something I try to bring to my team and the ball field every time I get the chance to play.

Has baseball always been your No. 1 sport?

Yes. Baseball has always been my No.1 sport. I have been playing baseball since I could walk. I’ve played basketball and soccer and have tried many other sports but I’ve never had the connection that I do with baseball. I just feel like I can just step back and be myself when I play baseball.

Do you come from an athletic family?

Yes. My dad played baseball and basketball in high school but didn’t get the chance to play in college. My mom played basketball, soccer, field hockey and was a cheerleader.

Who are your favorite musical artists?

My favorite musical artists are Khalid, Logic, Lil Tecca, Drake, Post Malone, G-Eazy, PnB Rock, Daniel Caesar, The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert, Charlie Puth and A Boogie.

Do you have any superstitions?

Yes. If I don’t say a prayer before a game or draw the sign of the cross on the ground before stepping up to the plate, I won’t get a hit.

What are your goals for 2020?

My goals for 2020 are to have straight A’s in school and to win one last Championship at Kellenberg before I graduate!!

Who are the toughest pitchers you’ve faced?

The toughest pitchers I have faced are Ryan Lynch (Notre Dame) and Cameron Wheeler (UC Irvine).
