Get to Know Coltrane Calloway

One of the top players in the 2021 class came off the board yesterday. Coltrane Calloway, a junior at Bay Shore HS, committed to Seton Hall University. For those who have been following us since the Baseball on the Island days, you may be familiar with Coltrane. It was September 2016 when we covered a Body Armor vs Team Beast game at Baseball Heaven. Calloway, then on Team Beast, was the best player on the field. It was on the small field, but he threw a complete game and hit a home run, providing a glimpse into his future. It was not far-fetched to say he looked like he would be a Division-I athlete even back then.

I had a chance to speak with him, and here’s what he had to say..

Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Seton Hall?

Now the recruiting process started when I went to a Prospect Launch Showcase two years ago. This showcase was like more than any other with all of the college scouts watching all around. Me being an outfielder I had outfield drills to do and I worked with the Seton Hall coach, Mark Pappas. They have been following me since that. These past couple of weeks, Seton Hall has come to see me in my three past tournaments. Luckily for me, my family and I did not have to pay money to go to a camp because they have been following me long enough. This past weekend I went on a visit of the campus, and had a sit down talk with Head Coach Rob Sheppard and Coach Mark Pappas and talked about grades, baseball and more. Then yesterday October 16 at 7 o’clock at night I got a phone call from the Head Coach and I gladly accepted his offer. All this time Seton Hall has been in my top three schools for a while now, and now with this I realized patience is key and not everything happens in a second.

Who are your biggest influences in life?

My biggest influences in my life are my family, and friends. My sister in particular has always looked out for me and wanted the best for me. She is my biggest fan and I can’t thank her enough for all she has done for me. My mother and father have been with me throughout this whole process since the beginning my dad knew I had a talent and this talent was baseball. My dad always says that he was a great athlete in high school but he doesn’t come close anywhere near me at this time as he says. Also my mom, she is always there for me during the baseball season’s and she’s also a big help with my education. This past summer from beginning of July to the middle of August every Monday and Wednesday I would go to SAT and ACT prep classes in the morning and she payed for everything. My family always says “education first, baseball second” and i highly agree with that. my friends play a big part in my success as well. they are always cheering me on and they always want the best for me. I can’t thank them enough.

What are some of your hobbies outside the game of baseball?

Some of my favorite hobbies are relaxing with my friends, going to the beach and blasting Logic on my speaker. Logic is the rapper that I listen to before every game because he gets me pumped. And the basic teen, I love to play MLB The Show whenever I can.

Who are your favorite players in Major League Baseball and why?

My favorite players in the Major League would have to be Juan Soto, Andrew McCutchen, and Mike Trout. Juan Soto is an inspiration because I look up to him because of his age, being someone so young and still producing the way he does on the field is incredible. I loved watching McCutchen as a kid and he always stuck with my dad and I. And Mike Trout because I feel like I can relate to him because he lives in the Northeast and an outfielder and he’s just a stud in general.

Who are your favorite musical artists ?

My favorite musical artists are Logic and Rex Orange County. I’ve followed Logic for a while now and he’s stuck with my sister and I. He’s a killer rapper and I know almost all of his songs, and Rex Orange County because my friends introduced him to me and I’ve liked him ever since.
Are you glad you got to experience varsity as a ninth grader ? Was it a difficult transition?
Personally I liked and disliked being a freshman on varsity because it was difficult for me. As one would expect I knew I was not going to start as a freshman on varsity and I am very glad and happy that I’ve had the experience of being a varsity player since ninth grade because it showed me what the future competition was going to be like going forward in the future. it was difficult because I didn’t play as much which I wish I was playing, there was a time where I just wanted to play really bad so I was contemplating going down to JV to get PT but I thought that varsity would be much better for me. I enjoyed varsity and the upperclassmen who were above me gave me a great example of what to come and we’re great role models. And also give me the opportunity to build a bond with my coach.
Can you explain what it’s like playing on a talented team like Body Armor ?
Playing on the Body Armor  Titans has been a life-changing experience for me. I’ve been on BA Titans since 13U up to now. This past year was the most drastic year for my baseball career. Being ranked 1st in NY 4th in Region and 65th in the country is a big accomplishment for the 16u age group. This year has been the biggest wake up call because I was playing with commits already on the team. Dylan Johnson, Luke Orbon, Rafe Schlesinger, Sean Lane we’re committed during the summer and that pushed me to continue working hard and get stronger and become faster. And with my other teammates as well who are great too. Nick Roselli, Josh Graham, Josue Valdez, Giovanni Cocchiaro and more players too. Also all the coaching has been incredible as well. Bobby DeMichael, John Habyan, and Tom Downey have taught me all of the skills that I needed to further myself as a D1 athlete and I can’t thank them enough for that.
What are your goals for 2020?
Personally in 2020 I am going to hit the weight room more than I have ever been because the journey starts now. Also I would love make my 60 speed faster than my previous 6.9 and just grow more as a player in general.
