12U Mustangs Hang On For Win over Legends

by James Ryder

The 12u East Meadow Mustangs faced the PYA Legends on Carpentier Field Saturday morning at the East Meadow Baseball Complex. The teams managed to exchange leads for most of the game. Several runs came on RBI’s and errors by both teams. In the end, East Meadow was able to hang onto the lead and win 7-6.

The Mustangs’ first lead of the game came in the top of the first inning. Joe Augustin hit a lead off single and was brought home on Trevor Smith’s RBI double to the left field fence. In the bottom half, the Legends responded by taking their first lead. Jack Mastronardi’s bloop single to shallow left-center field scored Leo Schindler to tie it up at 1-1. Mastronardi then stole second and came around to score on an error. A ground ball hit to second base was thrown in an attempt to turn two. This gave the Legends a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless second inning, both teams again saw lead changes in the third. The Mustangs scored another two runs on Smith’s 2 RBI double, this time to deep RF, to go up 3-2. Two straight fielding errors allowed the Legends to score two runs of their own. An RBI sacrifice fly ball to CF from Michael Iourio expanded their lead to 5-3.

Another scoreless inning in the fourth led to East Meadow scoring their final four runs of the day in the top of the fifth. Mazin Ibrahem and Teddy Komis hit back to back lead off singles. The former came home on an RBI single from Parker Goldstein and the latter scored from third on a dropped pop up to CF. Finally, Augustin grounded out to the shortstop for another RBI and East Meadow went up 7-5.

In the next frame, PYA looked to make one final comeback. They managed to chip away with an RBI ground ball to third by Mastronardi. However, that would be the last run of the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Legends put one player on base, but couldn’t find a way to score this time. Final Score: East Meadow 7, PYA 6.
