The summertime is hurricane season for the east coast. As this piece is being written, the southeastern United States is experiencing such a storm. And on Saturday afternoon, a similar event occurred at Plainedge Park, despite the beautiful blue skies.
Appropriately, it was the 10u Massapequa Cyclones who quickly passed through four innings of play and did major damage against the Farmingdale Greendogs. Some fierce pitching, in addition to runners circling the bases like a torrential whirlwind, led to the Cyclones’ dominating 10-0 win.
Massapequa scored 8 of their 10 runs in the first inning. Davin DiFlorio led off in the coolest way possible with an inside the park home run on the first pitch he saw. Three quick at bats later, the bases were loaded for Michael LaFrumento who lined a ball into right-center field for a 3-run triple to make it 4-0. He then scored on a passed ball. Gio Addona walked and was brought home on another triple, this one from Michael Scarry to give them a 6-0 lead.
After a passed ball and an throwing error to the pitcher at the plate allowed 2 runs, the Greendogs were forced to make a pitching change. Jake Mora came in and got all three outs in a row. Farmingdale struggled to get on base all game. Sebastian Castiello started the game, but only pitched the first inning. He had one strikeout and one walk given up having only faced four batters. LaFrumento pitched the second inning. After the lead off hitter reached first safely on an error at first, he recorded three straight outs of his own, which included 2 K’s.
In the top of the third, Massapequa tacked on two more runs on Nicky Lopez’s 2 RBI single to LF. Then, in the bottom half of the inning, Christopher Franzese pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Finally, Addona came in and closed out the game with 2 strikeouts facing five batters. The Cyclones rained on the Greendogs parade with an offensive downpour and stellar pitching. Final Score: Massapequa 10, Farmingdale 0.
Both teams will be back in action tomorrow in the East Coast Labor Day Bash Presented by Axcess Baseball.
