Q & A With Mike Prisco

Newfield has established themselves as one of the teams with elite talent in Suffolk County. This was not always the case–which makes this era that much more significant in their program’s history. You could count on one hand the Division-I athletes they had during the period when I was in high school 2006-2009.

Now, you can’t count on one hand how many Division-I athletes they had in 2018 because that would be six.

With Mike Prisco‘s verbal commitment to Albany yesterday that means their 2018 League Champion team had six Division-I commits. That is a remarkable number for any team.

I had a chance to speak with Prisco and here’s what he had to say…

Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Albany?

My experience with the college recruiting process was difficult because of my injury sophomore year. Luckily, I had good coaches and mentors who have helped me through out the process. Emailing and getting in front of as many schools as possible helped me a lot. I went to Albany’s camp and went on a visit and knew it was a great fit for me.

Who are your biggest role models in life and why?

My parents are my biggest role models. They have always taught me hard work and instilled good values. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.

Who are your favorite athletes and why?

Two of my favorite athletes are Derek Jeter and J.D. Martinez. Derek because of his leadership and how humble he was. J.D. Martinez because of how much work he puts into his swing.

You had a chance to catch the 2018 Newfield staff that featured five Division-I arms?

The 2018 Newfield staff was a very impressive staff. Each guy had his own style. The three seniors brought a lot of experience, all being four-year starters. They were all great leaders. Kyle Johnson always took the mound with confidence and always had a calm demeanor. Bobby Vath was a hard worker and always pushed the rest of us to be better. Ryan Wappaus was a pitcher and played multiple positions for us. He was used as a starting pitcher and also closed some game for us. Chandler Giovinco was a dynamic player. He was dominant on the mound and also had an explosive bat. Dylan Johnson was mainly used as a relief pitcher his freshman year. All his pitches have movement and you could tell he was going to be something special.

What has been your most thrilling moment on a baseball field?

My most thrilling moment on a baseball field was clinching playoffs at Centereach in 2018. It was the first time any of us had experienced playoffs and first time in over a decade.

Do you have any superstitions?

I have many superstitions. Before every game I make sure I keep my cousins’ memorial bracelet with me.

What are your goals for 2020?

In 2020, one of my goals is to ake playoffs and win a championship with Newfield. Another goal of mine is to stay healthy my senior year.
