Shoreham-Wading River making the playoffs is just one of the facts of life. It’s been over 3 decades since they have missed out. While they did not capture the Suffolk Class A title (that went to Sayville), they had another strong season thanks to the emergence of pitchers like Aidan Crowley and Cullen SantaMaria. The former committed to Boston College earlier this summer, while the latter committed to Hofstra University just two days ago.
I had a chance to speak with Cullen and here’s what he had to say…
Who is your favorite player in the MLB and why?
Trevor Bauer is my favorite MLB player because he works hard to perfect his craft every day.
Who are the biggest role models in your life and why?
My parents are my most significant role models in life. They are behind every decision that I make and guide me to be the best possible person that I can be. I’m grateful to have parents like mine to support me every day of my life.
Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process?
The college recruitment process was exciting. I got to travel around the country, and pitch at different colleges and tournaments. While playing with the East Coast Lumberjacks, Coach Pembroke talked to college coaches every day for me. I’m fortunate to have Mr. Pembroke as a coach; none of this would be possible without him.
What was it like watching history this season with Aidan Crowley’s back-to-back-to-back no-hitters?
Aidan Crowley has been my teammate and friend for 10 years, and seeing him excel this year during school baseball was very thrilling to watch. I am excited to see him pitch this upcoming season, now that he is committed to Boston College.
Do you have any private trainers or a pitching coach?
My private trainer is Adam Merone at GameDay Fitness and my pitching coach is Neal Heaton at All Pro Sports. Both Mr. Merone and Mr. Heaton have helped me achieve my goal of playing Division-I baseball at Hofstra University.
What is it like being a part of a storied program like Shoreham-Wading River?
The Shoreham-Wading River baseball program is very inspiring and exhilarating. SWR baseball has excelled every single year due to high-level athletes and a strong camaraderie between players. The team is a family that I am happy to be a part of.
What are your goals for 2020?
By the end of 2020, I plan on becoming stronger and unlocking my full potential as a pitcher. I also hope to continue my academic success.
Do you have any superstitions?
Before every game, the team and I share Mott’s fruit snack.
