Q & A With Sean Delahunty

One of the most exciting finishes in the Axcess Baseball era came on April of 2018 at Cantiague Park. In the seventh inning, Chaminade was attempting to make a comeback against Holy Trinity. On a single to right field, Dylan Reilly fired a strong throw and catcher Sean Delahunty made an exceptional play to make the tag to end the game.

Now over a year later, Delahunty is now at Lindenhurst HS, who is coming off a great run to make the playoffs. Delahunty was in the news this week, as he commit to Caldwell University.

I had a chance to speak with Delahunty and here’s what he had to say.

Who are your favorite players in the MLB and why?

Buster Posey because he gives it 100% every game, and is a role model on and off the field.
Who are your biggest role models in life and why?
My parents are my biggest role models. They have supported me throughout my entire baseball career, along with Jim Orlando, my travel coach who has motivated me to succeed by being fair, positive, patient, sincere, and honest. He has taught me to become a better person on and off the field.
Can you talk us through your experience with the college recruiting process and how you made your decision ?
The recruiting process for me has been fun. I’ve gotten to visit numerous schools, and played on beautiful college fields up and down the East coast and meet some the best baseball minds in college baseball. The recruiting process really got serious for me over the last couple of months. I was recently at a showcase at William Patterson University where I had one of the best baseball days of my life. Later that night I was contacted by one of the coaches from Caldwell University. We were then invited to the University where I fell in love with the campus and the coaching staff, I knew that day that I wanted to be a Caldwell University Cougar.
What has been your biggest thrill playing the game of baseball?
My freshman year at Holy Trinity High School I was brought up to varsity about 10 games into the season by Head Coach at the time, Robert Malandro, little did I know I was starting that day and catching for Stony Brook commit Senior, Ryan Karp and playing against St. John the Baptist, and Logan O’Hoppe. I also got my first varsity hit that game on my first at-bat.
Do you have any private coaches that you work with ?
My hitting coach is Tom Caputo, one of the owners of Long Island Junior Ducks and current assistant coach at St Joseph’s College. I also train at Superior athletics with Bill Romm (Owner) and Dom Giammona (Trainer).
Do you have any superstitions on the field?
I never play without wearing my St Sebastian chain.
Favorite pregame meal?
I always have two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a banana, and a protein shake before a game.
Who are your favorite musical artists ?
Florida Georgia Line
Tell us about the famous play at Cantiague Park that ended the game last season.
It was my sophomore year at Holy Trinity, it was the bottom of the 7th, 2 outs, Chaminade had men on first and second and it was a single to right field, and the right fielder, Dylan Reilly threw a laser to me at the plate, I dove and put down the tag at the plate to end the game. That was one of the best high school plays of my life.
Can you explain your decision to transfer back to public school?
My first two years at Holy Trinity were amazing. I played Varsity Football and Baseball and played for some great coaches such as Tony Mascia, Rob Malandro, and Dan Luisi. It was towards the end of my sophomore year where I had a change of heart and wanted to return to my hometown, Lindenhurst and wanted to play football and baseball with my childhood friends. It was not an easy decision but it was the right decision for myself where I got to play for Coach Lombardo for football and play baseball for Rob Moore and Coach Cannobbio. Now I am entering my senior year where I have decided not to play football and concentrate on my grades, training, and baseball. My goal this year is to be an All-County baseball player and lead the Lindenhurst baseball team back to playoffs
