They sent 16 batters to the plate and crossed the plate 11 times against two pitchers.
That third inning was the reason the 12U 495 Wolfpack was able to complete a a four-inning rule-rule victory over the East End Aviators in a 4th of July Stars & Stripes Tournament game this afternoon.
They got out to a quick start in this game, using three walks to load the bases for fifth-place hitter Andrew Chelius. He roped a two-run rule double to score Vaughn Steinert and Isaiah Gibbs to make it 2-0.
They sent Kyle Lucas to the hill and he was in no rush to let that lead slip away. The power pitcher fired a harmless 1-2-3 first inning with two ground outs to second base and a come backer to the mound.
The Wolfpack loaded the bases with no out in the second inning but were held scoreless after a strikeout, shallow fly out and grounder to first.
They did the bulk of their action in the third inning. Gibbs led off with a walk, and Lucas followed with a walk as well. Chelius blooped an RBI single to center field, followed by a hit by pitch of Ray Mardiney. After the first out was recorded, another hit by pitch loaded the bases and Nate Padron drew a walk to bring in a run. A two-run double by Joe Bode made it 7-0. A bases loaded walk to Steinert made it 8-0 before Gibbs connected on a bases-clearing triple to make it 11-0. Lucas followed with an RBI double, as did Chelius to make it 13-0. A single preceded a strikeout to finally end the innning after 16 batters and more than 30 minutes.
A new pitcher for the Wolfpack came on to throw a 1-2-3 third inning to let the bats get back to work.
In the top of the fourth, they added four more runs with the big knock coming on a bases-clearing triple by Steinert to right field to make it 16-0.

Coach Michael Tinney was pleased with his team’s performance but they understand that the playoffs for the tournament begins tomorrow and they will have another challenge ahead of them.
