Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning, the 10U LI Titans bats came to life on Independence Day.
After an error opened the inning, they used a single and a two-run double by Tom Okpych to open up a 4-1 lead followed by an RBI infield single by CJ Everett to short stop to make it 5-1. Not content with their lead, they also got a two-run triple from lead off hitter Andrew Noe to break it open at 7-1.
“Our team has been scoring a lot of runs in key situations,” said Head Coach Kenny Noe. “Today it was a 2-1 game and we put up a 5-spot to break it open. We’ve been coming up with big hits all through our order—we bat everybody—and everybody has really responded. We’ve been doing well,” he added.
They had a little scare in the bottom of the fifth inning when their pitcher lost his command, hitting three batters and walking another to make it 7-2. The lead was cut to 7-3 when Mark Villeck hit an RBI single down the right field line to make it 7-3 and bring the tying run to the plate with only one out.
The threat was averted with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning maintaining a 7-3 lead.
The Titans added one more run in the top of the sixth on a two-out RBI double by Shane Meehan to give them an insurance run and make it 8-3.
They brought in hard-throwing right-handed pitcher Tim Montenegro who promptly struck out the side to seal the victory.
Coach Noe stated that he is confident in the team’s pitching staff being that they have “eight or nine guys” that can come in and throw strikes and they are looking to clinch a bye with a victory tomorrow.
Montenegro also was the reason the Titans took an early 1-0 lead, when he doubled with one out in the second inning, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch.
After LIB tied it in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out off the bat of Lorenzo D’Ambrosio, Jack Corrigan gave the Titans a 2-1 lead in the top of the third on a sac fly.
